SSM

i am looking for the cheapest best way to get SSM for my 94.
i am willing to pay more for better software (better means functionality... not ability to change gauge colors and useless stuff)

i am also in need of the cable.
what is a good choice?
what is a better choice?

there is freessm
there is LANs (i think it has ssm)
any other help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Steve, if you buy the parts, I can put it together for you.

Re: SSM

The torque app for Android has SSM support using certain adapters. Googleit and search their forums for SSM. From what I read you can connect to the port on the pre-96 cars.

I should be getting it at the end of next week to try it out but it sounds like it will do SSM1 or SSM2, depending on the cable you use. The cable I am getting has the SSM1 connector for pre 1996 cars but also has a connector that will access the SSM pins in the OBD2 port on 1996 to 1998 cars. Those cars supposedly speak SSM1.

I also bought the OBD2/SSM2 cable for my Tribeca.

Re: SSM

When electronic diagnostics first became available, each car manufacturer had their own different protocol for the scantool to talk to the car.

Subaru had a system in the late 80's that we call SSM0 and then in the early 90's they upgraded to SSM1. Early SVXes speak SSM1.

In the mid-90's the US government mandated a standard protocol called OBD2 for all vehicles, regardless of manufacturer. So Subaru added the
standard OBD2 protocol into the SVX ECU in addition to their own Subaru-specific SSM protocol.

Also in the mid-90's Subaru upgraded their own protocol from SSM1 to SSM2. Late model SVXes speak OBD2 as legally required, and also either SSM1 or SSM2 (but we don't know which one!).

All this only applies in USA because the rest of the world didn't adopt OBD2 until after the SVX ceased production. All non-US models are SSM1 as far as I know.

Anyway, Evoscan can do SSM1, SSM2 and OBD2 so it should work on all SVX.

I ordered the $57 SSM1/OBD2 cable and it is on a slow boat from New Zealand. My car is OBD2 and it also uses pins reserved for manufacturers to also communicate using what I believe is SSM1.
