In 1997, they changed the base model's engine to a 3.0L making 160hp. Same engine, cheaper cost detuned, I guess. It's the same engine that was offered in all Dodge Stealth base models during the Stealth's whole production run. "

Base model 3000GTs are slugs.

Base models are so lame. Its like factory rice: Looks fast, drives slow. Plus you get all the 'benefits' of having extremely high insurance! Blech.

right..

as a DSM graduate( dsm= drivetrain soon failing) i can tell you frist hand that it will be less reliable then most sports cars youcan buy. Any DSM owner will tell you, they are GREAT CARS....i loved mine to death.
But as with the SVX its a love hate relationship, and they break, alot. All DSM trannies are prone to destruction, TEL's like to eat bronze for lunch, even un modified. and the fifth gear on 3k gt's are prone to having the retaining bolts loosen then the gear come off on the early model turbo's, not sure about the newer model 6 speed , the friends i new had early model turbo's claiming the trannies were stronger. That in turn eats away at the gearbox housing. This is why you hear of many ownwers complaining of going in to get their gear boxes rebuit, only to recieve the horrifying news that you need a new core as well.
So it comes down to two things. How much do you love the car, and how often can you go between paychecks without being able to drive it? I garuntee any other current or previous TEL/3KS owner will give you the same response as me.

just my 2cents

those are some scary stories!!! i considered one of those, but they're just so common around here, and even used VR4's are still pretty expensive.
how about a Supra, RX-7, 928, 944, M3, Trans Am WS6, Audi S4, etc. all these can be had for the price of a late model VR4.

I kinda doubt that an Audi S4 could be cheaper.. VR-4's are actually coming down in price now... $10k or less. And if RX-7s were that cheap, I'd be on a rotary forum instead of here by now.

i've seen used VR-4's around here in the high $20k's. you can get used S4's for around $30k, used RX-7's less than that. i think the new Z is around $30k, but the sport model (which you would HAVE to get) is $35k.

Any year DOHC and SOHC 3000GT/Stealth Non-Turbo will give you years of reliable driving. The 3.0L SOHC (Found in many older Chrysler cars as well) has been around for ages and the DOHC is good too..

Nothing really goes wrong with the Twin Turbo units EXCEPT for the Getrag transmission. Synchros (2nd gear) and the output shaft (rusting) problems are common.. It use to be a $4,000 affair but within the past couple years, a place in California has been manufacturing internal tranny parts and rebuilding cheap so its a lot more inexpensive now.

Parts a lot cheaper then for a SVX, but it is harder to do work in the engine bay.

I've owned 3 of these cars and they were great! (Only problem, the R/T TT where I had to replace the output shaft)

Wow, insane prices over there. When I was in the market for a used car (~2 years ago), I almost got a '90 3000GT VR-4 for $10k. I know that was a good deal, but I'm guessing they should be lower than that by now.

Funny, my dad's '94 3000GT base model has had the timing belt break, which resulted in engine damage and a new engine being put in, as well as a tranny replacement. In addition, there's numerous other smaller problems, minor mechanical and appearance stuff (fading black plastic, the one where it says "twin turbo" on the VR-4, as well as nasty bubbles in the vinyl-like material that covers the inside of the doors). But that's just my personal experience.

fast does not equal quality. faster than an Integra - i don't know but i'll take your word for it, but in ten years from now, check the amount and time spent on repairs on a Neon vs. an Integra. i think the Dodge quality will shine through when the interior is rattling itself apart and the transmission is grinding. i'm not just saying this because i don't like Neons - my best friend is a service manager at a Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge/Jeep dealer and i've heard more horror stories about these brands than you can imagine. i will NEVER buy one of the above. i don't think $20k is chump change to spend on a junky car.
