Might as well drive an SUV..

I just got my tank to empty from when I filled it a while ago. I haven't been driving around much so it took a while to get these results.

I was trying to find out my MPG for my 92 pearl and I came up with 234 miles from a full tank, which averages out to nearly 13 MPG.... I only get 13 MPG in my day to day, mixed highway and city driving (mostly highway) and that's just terrible.. I have new(ish) spark plugs, new O2 sensors, I've run some cleaner through the fuel system and something to clean the injectors and this thing still sucks down gas very quickly..

Any advice?

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

Interesting you posted this. My car used to get terrible, terrible gas mileage, like 200-250 miles a tank. I just thought thats how it was. But on the way to reading, it got almost 500 miles on a tank, provided that was with cruise control on 90% of the time. Its a bit better now, but still bad. I need to start resetting the trip odo when i fill it up and see what happens.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

Ya know, it's really funny. I used to get 22-24 city in my silver before the high clutch failed. After that, even though I only had 1st and 2nd gear, used to get 15-17, in fact, it would still get 17 even doing 60 mph on the short highway runs i took with it at over 5000 RPM.
When I came out to West Virginia the first time, I realized why people got much worse gas mileage than what I was used to. But 13 seems crazy low even if just city and short trip driving. Might want to have OT hook up the select monitor to see if that's showing anything goofy.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

Well I just hit 55 miles on my Laguna 5 speed on $20.00 worth of gas all in town and I still have about 1 gal left .I should get to 65 or even 70 miles all in town . OH that's $4.07 a gallon 4.9 gallons if I only get to 65 miles before the dreaded low fuel light comes on again it will be 13.26 MPG but even at 55 miles guessing at 1 gal left it still gas looks like 13.5 miles to a gallon ..... BTW my 92 Pearlie with stock auto got about 10 to 11 MPG on the same gas same road same everything. I will let u know.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

It all depends on what gas you are using. Some gas is without ethanol and some has 10% in it. If it has it in there, you will get 10% worse mileage. Other gas (winter or summer) can have an effect on it too. I know that I get the best mileage on Chevron gas than others like ARCO or other cheaper gas.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

Also, 91,92, and 93 or higher octanes all seem to make a difference in my experience. One time I used 91 octane, non ethanol and ended up getting about 25 hwy with my laguna. Typically with 93 octane with a 10% ethanol blend, I would easily see over 30mpg. Same driving conditions. Hwy with cruise control and a/c on.

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

I would routinely get 330 miles to a tank with combined city and highway driving in my 96 polo, so I dont understand how some of you guys are getting 13mph per gallon, that makes no sense to me.

Bret,
Are you saying that you put $72.00 of premium fuel in?
Gas around here is right $4.00 a gallon.
If you put in less gas you got better MPG.
This happens all of the time, people makes mistakes.
Hey, I evan got marred!

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

That MPG is driving stop and go 2 miles turn it off drive maybe 4 miles ant turn it off . If I take it out on the high way I bet I get close to 30 . some day I will have to give it a go . BEST I ever got with the auto was 27.5 Kansas going 75 Mph average for 6 hours...more than a tank of gas obviously.

I'm going to miss getting over 550 miles on a tank with the laguna. Oh well, Clint will be able to enjoy that soon

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

I guess mine is about average I thought 19 mpg was pretty bad but 13 sounds real bad...i have an app on my phone that I use to keep track and I have been averaging about 19...but a year ago it was down there in the 14 range...and it is always less in the winter...A LOT WORSE

Re: Might as well drive an SUV..

My best mileage was when my head gasket was on the way out and I had to keep the RPM's below 3k. I used to get close to 30.

I'm gonna bet you didn't run the tank dry. That's pretty much impossible.

What method exactly did you use to figure out how much gas you used for those 234 miles?
