Oil filter study

Just found this link to a relatively new oil filter study:

http://www.gmtruckcentral.com/articl...lterstudy.html

The highest rated filter that offers a filter with the larger size (Porsche 944) is the K&N. For the standard size filter, one could probably find filters from the other highly rated options. The Fram Xtended Guard rated suprisingly high.

Re: Oil filter study

Thanks for the link - very interesting study. Makes me think about going away from the purolator pure one's I've been using for years.

The K&N looks very similar in construction to the mobil one.....

Very interesting. Thanks for the link. I will rethink what I use in the future as well. The Fram Xtended Guard being the best of all is very surprising.

Re: Oil filter study

I'm glad people are finding this informative. It has actually pushed me toward increasing my OCI. I am thinking of pushing it to 6000 miles and here is the reasoning.

Subaru suggests an OCI of 7500 miles or 3750 miles if one drives in harsh conditions. Harsh conditions are extreme cold or heat or driving in a dusty environment or making lots of short trips. The only thing that applies to me is the extreme cold or heat and that is only for about half the year. Splitting the difference gets me 5625 miles.

If I am thinking about longer OCIs, I will only do it if I use a synthetic like Mobil 1 which claims to be good out to 7500 miles regardless of conditions. So, really, my oil should be in good shape beyond 5625 miles if I am using a synthetic.

While the oil may hold up in terms of not becoming excessively oxidized and acidic, there is still the issue of contaminants finding their way into the combustion chamber and, hence, the oil and oil filter. That is why people still change oil filters when they switch to synthetics and extend their OCIs. But the larger Purolator and K&N filters are 60% larger than the stock filter. 60% more miles would equate to 6000 miles if the reference point chosen is the lower 3750 mile number.

So, given that I don't drive in extreme conditions year round, I am switching to Mobil 1 and I am using a 60% larger filter, I think a 6000 mile OCI is fine.

I take it Chevy does not brand their own oil filters like Subaru does?

I believe GM's brand would be the "Delco" but things may have changed.

AC Delco is a GM brand.
as for Napa filters are WIX
and most others are primarily FRAM

I urge you to NOT use Mobil in your EG33.. Especially if you have fun with it past 5000rpm. I have torn apart many engines that have disintegrated rod bearings from the inferior Mobil.

I don't spend a lot of time above 5000 miles and what is Mobil 1 inferior to? I have looked at a lot of oil data and Mobil 1 is pretty good by most accounts. It isn't up there with Redline or Amsoil but it is better than most of the typical dino oils. And I think it rates better than most of the commonly available synthetics.

There's a lot of reports of mobil1 not being a good oil for subaru's apparently theres a lot of people who's recked engines on the stuff

I'm speculating but if they raced with it in the engine then, yeah, it probably ended up badly. Mobil 1 is not a racing oil. Redline, Amsoil and Royal Purple sell racing oils. I think Mobil even has a line of racing oils.

I have attached one of the best summaries of motor oils I have ever seen. The rankings are grouped by oil weight.
