Mirror Adjustment Lamp
Has anyone attacked replacing the lamp behind the arrows on the mirror adjustment switch? I've pulled the switch and there is no "visible" access to that lamp. Do you have to pry the "arrow" portion of the switch off to access the lamp? Thanks in advance.

Hey, sounds like a job for KuoH! I think that guy has tackled every light in the passenger compartment.

There is a light in there? I've never seen mine iluminate since I've owned it. Thanks for making me go take it apart looking for one to replace... Doug

Mirror adjustment lamp
I will check mine tonight. I swear that my switch illuminates only the four little directional arrows on the round control. However, the parts book from subaruparts shows only the switch with no replaceable bulbs. The breakdown of the other switches shows the replaceable bulbs/LEDs for them.
The part number for this switch is 83071PA020MD and runs $50.36 from subaruparts.com

There had better NOT be any light bulbs in that little disc that I set once, and never touched again, and I couldn't see anyway, 'cause it's blocked by the turn signal arm anyway. I mean if they really bothered to light up THAT thing, and NOTHING under the hood, my faith in Japanese ingenuity will be permanently diminished.
Tsu.

I disasembled it.
OK. I took out and apart the mirror switch. There is a replaceable bulb inside, but in a different socket than other indicator lights.
Here's the way I did it. I took three small flat pocket screwdrivers (the kind they give away at various shows and such) and slid one under each grey (or beige) tab on one side of the assembly. Then I gently held the assembly in one hand and gripped the black connector with the other and rocked the connector away from the screwdrivers. That released one side without damage, then I took one screwdriver and released the three remaining tabs one at a time. When you remove the connector assembly (the black part) have the face (with buttons) down to avoid losing parts all over the place. Look at the inside of the black assembly and you will see the illuminator resting in a red rubber sleeve. Grab the bulb assembly by the green skin and slide the rubber socket out. remove the bulb by unwrapping the leads and then remove the green condom. I'm going to walk over to Radio Shack this morning after they open and see which bulb fits. Assembly is reverse of disassembly. Enjoy! Doug

green condom.
I told you that they don't keep forever in a wallet!
So there is a bulb *inside* my mirror aiming toggle? I wonder what other bulbs are toast in the cockpit. Because I do a lot of night driving on country roads I have the instrument lights down low almost all the time. Maybe that's why I don't notice thier absence so much. Too much information. Didn't you once tell me that you drive alone most of the time? How'd you fare the storms last night? We had quite a windy time up north der hey. Doug

radio shaft
I went the Radio Shack route for the dash button lights and found an "almost" fit #7219 Micro Lamp. They are sold in pack of two for a buck or so. They are too short (at least for the lamp bases in the dash switch assemblies). They barely extend beyond the end of the base, and thus put out very little light. I took a piece of heavy guage speaker wire that fit securely into the base, stripped off the insulation, and cut this into little pieces to use as spacers between the lamps and the bases. Viola. Slide the little green "hat" back on and you are good to go. A very cheap easy fix.
That makes two, and only two, cheap easy fixes that I know of for the SVX (The power steering O-ring being the other).

alone most of the time?
The operative word there is *most*.
The storms last night were mostly lightning and noise with a whole bunch of rain. Surprisingly not too much wind out on Wind Point. Of course when the rain first started coming down the suddenly remembered the patio umbrella was still open. There's our hero, out in the pouring rain at midnight cranking the thing down so it won't blow away. And then at 2 am when the cats decided they wanted in. meowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeowme owmeowmeowmeow Hey, that's why I'm so tired today. |
