"Classic" registration success stories - please share!

The topic of registering the SVX as a "classic" or similar specialized registrations came up a couple years back, and with the car approaching 20 years now and the Network having a program that can assist with documentation, I was curious who has had success and in what capacity?

Which members have attempted to do anything with this?

Registered their SVX as a classic (or whatever) with their state's DMV?

Got special insurance rates related to this?

Been exempt from emissions and other such programs? (Bonus if you did this in CA)

Please share your stories good or bad!

Mine has been registered as classic for the past 4 years. It's nice if you don't drive it that much. I feel uncomfortable bending the 1 day a week or special events rules. Sometimes I'd like to take it to work, but can't. There is a one time registration which is nice and no emissions is a money saver. The big daddy is the insurance $184 a year with full coverage. If your svx is a second car that you don't really need to rely on I'd say go for it. If you do though I don't think you could go back to a normal registration. You also need a place for it to live and the driveway doesn't count.

Re: "Classic" registration success stories - please share!

Thanks Michael, sounds like a pretty good deal (other than of course not getting to drive it as much).

The SVX is currently my daily driver, but I'm looking ahead to the future a bit and with 230K on the odo and a growing list of "little things", I'd like to see it retire to a "slow restoration" status, but still be able to drive it on the occasional weekend or event if I get withdrawels.

But wouldn't be able to afford the price of insurance I'm paying now for a 3rd car in our family. The number your quoting sounds much more appealing, is that through your main insurance company, or a specialize one for classics?

I assume the rest of it varies from state to state, I'm in WA now, but may be in CA by the time this happens (which is additional concern as I would go from not having to do emissions to the strictest out there).

Great feedback, thanks! Anyone else?

CA emissions is nothing to mess around with I hear. Yes the insurance is through a specialized classic and antique insurer. Not driving so much really helps you whittle down the to-do list so long as it's stored in the proper environment.

How hard was it to get PennDOT to accept the classic registration? Also do you mind sharing the name of the inurance co you are using?

Re: "Classic" registration success stories - please share!

I have a regular tag on mine, but have it insured with "Classic Car" insurance (from my normal carrier) runs $120 for 6 months, Liability + Comp. ($75 for my XT6, Liability only)

The SVX meets the requirements for classic registration no problem. If you sell it the new owner has the option of keeping classic or going back to normal registration. I use Grundy insurance and they are great to deal with.
