trans problem ?

sometimes on my '92 svx while driving about 60 mph trans will shift back & forth from what I believe is 3 to 4 gear. maybe convertor clutch lock up if it even has one ?. doesn't do it very often but sure messes up fun drive ! engine goes from 3k rpm to 2200 rpm frequently, trans is supposed to have about 10 k on it, anyone know what to do ? thanks for any help, I drive it 700 to 800 miles per week

Yes that sounds like it is going from 4th back to third, and back again. In third the high clutch is on, for 4th the band is applied also. So as the band slips, it goes back to third.

The band is slipping because either, it needs to to adjusted properly or the oil line pressure is low. I would have a guess and go for the band adjustment, if the trans is only 10k old.

Edit: Seeing that it is at the cruise speed 60k, it may be the throttle position sensor that has a bad spot.

Harvey.

Re: trans problem ?

Before adjusting the brake band I would verify the tps is properly adjusted. It easy and quick. Having one adjusted out of spec can cause gear hunting.

Re: trans problem ?

Blimey, at £6.50 a gallon I wish I could afford to do 40,000 miles a year! With your fault being intermittent I would plump for a tps too. As a skinflint you might try marking it's position before taking it off and tapping it. Not a permanent cure but if it sorts it you know what to buy.

Re: trans problem ?

I'll vouch for TPS acting up causing it. and I say that because its happened to me. When I first got my baby, it was damn near undriveable, I fixed the driveability issues to find that it would not hold a gear above 55ish. Threw a TPS off a legacy on there, problem solved

If it was doing the slip/rev EVERY time, I'd tell you to start worrying, but I'm almost positive you just have an electrical issue

Re: trans problem ?

Replacing the TPS cured gear-hunting and AWD binding for me. I've always figured the P.O. was looking to unload the car because he figured the transmission was shot. I'm SO glad I gambled 180 bucks before heading to a transmission repair shop.

Re: trans problem ?

Sorry to be naive but, Where is the TPS and how do you adjust it?
Also, where is the brake band and how do you adjust it?
Update: I found the info in the "How to" section.
