Water pump froze, stripped timing belt - help

Just happpened last night so this is my best quess. It appears that the Water pump froze and then stripped the teeth on the timing belt, It all turns freely. Here's my biggest fear - Is this pump intergal to either the drive shaft or cam and could I have bent valves?

Thanks, Moggie

Valves are no problem. Water pump pulley is smooth... nothing to do with timing. I would be more concerned about possible damage to other parts of the engine from freezing... if you really froze

Hope it works out well.

The water pump is run by the timing belt, but the cams and crank are run off seperate pulleys. That and our engine is zero-interference (pistons at TDC will not contact with a fully open valve). You should be fine. Replace the water pump, gasket, timing belt, check all your idlers, and double check the timing marks on the pulleys line up with the marks on the belt. It probably seems much worse to you than it actually is.

Re: Water pump froze, stripped timing belt - help

I've remove everything - the water pump is out and frozen solid, even a pipe wrench on the spindle does not budge it. I also had tow idle pullys in pieces - berrings every were and one idler pully melted into the cover. The timing belt is shreaded. I did not remove the crank sproket or the cam sprokets.

So, water pump, gasket, thermostat, two ilder pullies - anything else I should do while I'm in there?

Moggie

Re: Water pump froze, stripped timing belt - help

Front main seal (around crank on the front of the oil pump). Especially if it looks old. Make sure that the crank pulley for the timing belt does not have any play in it. The Keyway should fit snug on the pulley. Same goes for the cam sprockets, but its harder to tell with them since there is a bolt putting tension on them. Other than that you should be good.

MAKE SURE THE MARKS ON THE PULLEYS LINE UP WITH THE MARKS ON THE BELT. There are also marks on the timing covers, but do not follow them. Good luck with the reassembly.

Re: Water pump froze, stripped timing belt - help

my pump went bad and it cost $200 to get it and the timing belt replaced. I bought the parts.

Why would you not follow the timing cover marks? How else would you line up both cam gears to the TDC correlating position? Just curious...
