Change the grease on the wheel bearings from the shipping grease that comes on them to a real wheel bearing grease. Mobile 1 makes a great synthetic grease. I'd pick some up and take it with you so that they have no excuse for not changing it. Don't overtorque the axle nut. If they're in a hurry, they'll just put it on real quick without making sure not to overdo it. Watch them to make sure they don't do this. Best way is to get one off of a parts car in your area. People are reluctant to ship them, so they're pretty difficult to get used. There aren't that many new ones left at all, and they're super expensive.

OK, update...
Water pump/timing belt are in... No more overheating issues right now. Going to go ahead and do the rear wheel bearing, too. *Yeay!*

Re: Wants to overheat
head gasket: $50.
labor: $1200. thought i had this problem, i considered getting a used engine. it was cheaper. turned out, the only thing wrong was a bad timing belt. ($150) this broke the timing belt cover ($85) the warped belt then broke my 4 idler pulleys ($500) and ruined my water pump ($200) and blew up my radiator ($200) stupid laws of the universe for things going wrong.

Re: Wants to overheat
$150 timing belt?
O'Reilly has them for like $88. I got the (lifetime reman) pump there, and will probably get the wheel bearing there, too. ~M

Re: Wants to overheat
Great news! I had an overheating problem too, it was caused by one of the dumb radiator caps with the little platic pressure release lever. The hood was apparently touching it ever so slightly, letting some coolant vent at running temp/pressure.

Re: Wants to overheat
Good luck! Just curious, did they do any tests to confirm the water pump was bad or was there something that lead them to that conclusion?

Re: Wants to overheat
To verify a bum head gasket, couldnt you just open the radiator and rev the engine looking for bubbles?

Re: Wants to overheat
It has been said many times on this forum, and by very many reputable members. The headgaskets failures are most likely related to age. Also how hard you drive your car. If you are overheating and you don't do a headgasket job then you are prolonging the inevitable. Overheating plus age equals eventual headgasket failure. The gaskets are TWO DECADES OLD in some cases. My car overheated on me, and I pulled my engine. There were 7 failures one 1 side! So good luck with your new water pump and timing belt. I wish you many miles of trouble free driving. But I honestly think that your gaskets are on their way out.

Re: Wants to overheat
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Cam. :-/
A couple weeks in, still NO temp issues. Should be ordering the wheel bearing soon. ~M
