car not starting

i turn the key to the position b4 starting and the lights turn on but when i try and turn the car on you hear the tick of the starter and all lights shut off.

When the starter is connected it draws a heavy current and the battery is probably unable to cope. Looks like your battery is not fully charged, or worse, is past its used by date.

P.S. Then again a high resistance and faulty battery connection can cause the same symptoms. Check both battery connectors and wiring.
