The start of an adventure in TT

Are on the way to me....

Either failure or TT excitement await (maybe both...)

Re: The start of an adventure in TT

They are from the 07 BMW335i twin turbo 3.0 liter I6.

The price was too good to refuse..hope they will fit/work. The manifolds may be tricky to work with, not exactly sure what I'll do there, I'll have to wait to see what they look like when they arrive.

Looks like it's going to be fun!

You still need to make it up here some day to hang out with Marisa and I!

She started putting her block back together this week

Re: The start of an adventure in TT

They arrived last week. About the same time as a detached retina in my left eye, so I've been a little out of action.

I think I'm going to have to keep the BMW manifold part on there and somehow rig up piping to the SVX exh. manifold. I'm sure those parts are made of some uuber secret BMW alloy that will not like to be welded to.

And yes! I would like to head up there one of these days. How's March 12-15? Got a few days off then and might be heading that way...

Re: The start of an adventure in TT

Pics of some stuff:

Turbo:

Not quite bolt on, but pretty close:

Better be enough room under there!

SVX vs. BMW:

The twins (mirrors of each other):

Looks like the plan will be to fabricate an adapter stack to align the exhaust ports on the SVX to the BMW manifolds. If so, I should be able to mount them low and they will not be any lower than the bottom of the stock exhaust manifolds. Then build a big skid plate!

Odd thing I noticed...the BMW wastegates are open under atmospheric pressure and only close when vacuum is applied to the solenoids, which is opposite of most normal turbos that I've seen. That will mean a custom boost controller of some sort.

Low mounting will require some sort of oil sump to pull the drained oil back up to the pan.

Next step is to make an adapter stack prototype from PVC pipe and see how things fit up.

Then to start thinking about management...... Either Megasquirt or ECUtune? I built an EA82T MS1 system a few years ago. Now they are up to MS3 which I think can control the SVX ignition system. Though ECUTune would be a lot simpler, just buy injectors, maf, and chip. Adjustability vs simplicity...?

Re: The start of an adventure in TT

Just get a pair of properly sized diaphrams... Replace the ones on the turbo with ones that will open the wastegates under + pressure.

Re: The start of an adventure in TT

Steve, these turbos and their idea is a great one. But the BMW is an inline engine and the exhaust ports are directly on its right side. When installed, they do not go any lower than the bottom of the engine which makes them good for car clearance/water/dirt/etc... Here check this picture:

Now on the EG33 the exhaust ports go below the engine (obviously you know that). I dunno how you will manage to protect those turbos from all the above, but I would suggest you to install them in the fender wells.

Re: The start of an adventure in TT

Have you looked into the Hydra for EM?

P.S. the 3.0L tt motor has such seamless lag. I imagine it should be awesome on the EG33. Cant wait to see what you come up with

That's the joy of utilizing a smaller quicker turbo for low rpm and the bigger one for top end/higher rpm

The new 335 was my dream car until they came out with the diesel version (290 hp, 430 lb ft torque and nearly 40mph highway ). Not that i'll ever own one, but I can dream Oh yeah, that was before I re-found the SVX.
