I got a used ENGINE.
I got a used engine with 82k miles delivered to the garage I was using. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...muter/3853.JPG
The engine was very dirty and did not look like it was stored indoors. Does anybody know who used to own this? It was a 1992. VIN >>http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...muter/3854.JPG I would really appreciate it if someone with CAR FAX could send me the report. The engine I took out had several leaking valves so figured I had better check out this engine. i was not going to put it in with bad valve and rings and head gasket, even with a six month warrantee. After I cleaned off the engine I did an air test on each cyclinder for leaks in the valves, head and rings. Dropped oil in each cyclinder to help lubricate and free up the rings. The engine had been sitting around for 2 years. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...muter/3855.JPG I was also concerned about coolant leaks so I sealed off the coolant system with hoses and filled the engine with water at 15 psi pressure overnight. Everything was dry in the morning and that was very good. No water in the oil sump or cyclinders. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...muter/3856.JPG I knew the engine was sitting outside a long time, so I blew out the fuel lines on the engine. The regulator valve worked fine at 38 psi. It blew out some old fuel and water. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...muter/3857.JPG The engine ran on Sunday night. After letting it warm-up and giving the sticky lifters time to work free I took it for a short trip and checked for leaks. The tranny fluid was leaking from the hoses near the back engine. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...muter/3858.JPG Just as a reminder, this is how hard my car hit the ground. Take a look at these tail pipes. The heat shield is completly flat against the exhaust pipe. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...muter/3859.JPG And a from a different angle. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...muter/3860.JPG I am very happy with the way this turned out at the moment. The used engine is running fine and sounds very good. Last edited by svx_commuter; 08-05-2002 at 11:37 AM. |

That's great news John!
Glad to hear you're back on the road again. Not that bad of a job, eh? I think we're now part of a very small group of folks here on the board who have seen the internals of our cars heart. As you said to me earlier, a job done well is a very good feeling!
What are you going to do with your original engine? I need some parts (valve covers , both sides, cam pulley (left side), cam angle sensor and mount). Are you willing to sell me some parts? Thanks, Todd

John - You should have called me - I was free on Saturday and could have given you a hand. I tried to call you but didn't get an answer.
Glad to hear it all worked out. Is that the engine from down near Phila.? |

I may rebuild the engine, so for now no parts. Sorry. This may change if I can't slavage the head and cam from the right side. It's a little wiped in the journal. That was the side with the head leak. |

This was used engine with a six month warrantee for about $1K as opposed to an engine with ???? miles, $3k and no warrantee. Saturday turned out to be a family day. My son was helpping me so I didn't bother to call you. Thank you for your help. Your tools are much more organized. John |

They are only more organized because they came in that box. If not for that, they would all be in a brown paper bag ;-p
Actually, I would probably buy some empty metal socket boxes and such at the tool outlet store or flea market. But the Sears box is convenient. Let me know how the used engine works out - $1000 is such a deal. Quote:

When I took out the head bolts each one of them cracked a few times, a lot of torque, and then as they got easier to turn, each one let out a hissing noise. Sounded as though some pressure was being released from in the threaded hole. Did you heard anything similar? John |

Felt and heard the same sounds John
Very difficult to break free as well.
