need front axle/cv assembly

My driver side CV is going out - feels and sounds with the clacking and whirring noise - anyway, I have looked all over Autozone, Advance, etc - all seem to either not have any or can only order the 2WD version (are these really different - the parts guy at Subaru says they are different parts, so I am hesitent to order).

Any help with either advice or availability on an axle is appreciated.

You can get them from a dealer too, but they cost 5 times as much and only have a 1 year warranty.

So far as I know they are different, you will need the AWD one.

Are you into French cars, or a fan of the Jungle Book?

Re: need front axle/cv assembly

I think napa was the cheapest I could find around here. $65 IIRC. I think they were even cheaper than rockauto.com. Speaking of rockauto.com, if you find an auto parts store that sells the same brands you can look up the part number yourself on rock auto and give it to your parts store if they say they don't have a listing.

Re: need front axle/cv assembly

hi the differance between a 2wd and awd is shaft thickness ,2wd cars put more torque to the front wheels ,every one talks about oem axles ,you can buy cheap ,but after martket remans dont last ,think about it ,i have 17 years and 167k on my axles ,you wont ever get that from the cheap axles
so it real depends on if you like to keep replacing parts
just my thoughs on axles ,but then i deal with them daily

Post is the advance auto the right part?

The name "Bagheera223" is my alter ego as the character is one of my favorites - the black panther in jungle book that could hold eye contact longer with Mogli than any other animal in the jungle. I have been into martial arts for decades.

Hey - I can either buy the Advance Auto part today as it's in stock, or get a used with 30 day guarantee of eBay - what do you guys suggest?

used part is $49.95, new reman is $69.95.

Also - how much work is it get this done? Guy locally wants to charge me $80, would do myself but all my jacks are holding up my WRX now, and I can't so this with ramps I would imagine.

Re: need front axle/cv assembly

Advance Auto one usually has a lifetime warranty. I did mine a couple weeks ago. Hardest part is getting the ball joint out of the strut tower. Other than that its fairly simple.

Re: need front axle/cv assembly

AyeJaye - I am about to go out to Advance and get the axle - I just added it to my cart on line and it says the part is for 2WD (not AWD), but it does say it fits my car - can I use it - I need to know ASAP before I buy this.

Please repond ASAP

Re: need front axle/cv assembly

so can I use a 2wd heavier shaft on my AWD car? can I replace just the driver side with one or do I have to do the pair together?

Much easier to remove the 2 bolts that let the strut tower tilt outward from the top. Be sure to carefully mark the exact spot of the alignment one!

If uncertain, mark them both... on the bolt side. a small chisel works for me, scoring both bolt head and the sleeve it goes into.

Not too tough a job. Jack stands, of course.

Re: need front axle/cv assembly

i work at advance and had massive problems locating one. we called advance second source, and after 2 days, my district manager found me some. for 79.99 with 65 dollar cores, AND the instructions said i had to swap out the trand side shaft witht he origional one... i think the ones they found me were the style that slide into the trans? not for that price though, with the extra work. so im just ordering boots, im kind of broke right now.

BUT, if you have a bumber to bumper in your area, try them, my brother had ordered some, and got them the next day. carquest (if you have one) also said they can get them shipped in by the next day for 59.95 reman, i just dont remeber their warranty.

Re: need front axle/cv assembly

I don't get it. I ordered mine from Advance with no issues whatsoever. They even had one in stock...
