That seriously blows...It would be nice if the deceased cars could go to network members.

I don't read either of those websites, it just happened to be the first one that came up for a Goggle search.

This is a link from the USA official EIA site depicting world oil usage.

Wrong too, I suppose, or at least debatable.
Whoever said the US doesn't use the most oil? Straw man.

North Americans are not really using more oil per capita than any other nation in the world, even though their own figures say so.
Straw man x3. Well, that's not fair. It's really just the first straw man restated.

Cash for Clunkers did nothing substantial to reduce oil usage nor carbon footprint (for those of you who are on that side of the debate). Do you deny this?

Also, just a question on your signature: do you completely believe that one ought not completely believe in anything?

No kidding.

I wonder how many of those are still not crushed yet, and are in actually better shape than mine is...

If it weren't the government doing this, it would be criminal.

Way back in the thread you agreed that the programme is primarily for removing "evil polluting gas guzzlers" off the road, although many are accepting it was an economic stimulus move. There's at very least a whiff of grass skirt from that stance, maybe even a straw man if truth were told.

Your term "did nothing substantial to reduce oil usage" is a mirror of your scornful estimate of a "ridiculously trivial" 1/4 day's consumption reduction, presumably a whole day's consumption would not be worth saving either.

One day's consumption is 1/365ths the yearly consumption of the highest oil using nation on the planet. I can't see how that's trivial.

And no, I don't agree with your nothing substantial statement. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Just to set the record straight I'm not holding any high moral ground here. I drive an SVX which uses three or four times the gasoline per mile the average new car uses round here. And I believe that Ireland is around 4th in the oil use per capita worldwide. We are making and accepting changes to our use patterns, but that does not change the relative positions for now.

And as regards your question on my signature; no, I don't really believe that statement, not completely anyhow.

Joe

You folks in Pennsylvania, Colorado and other SVX-rich regions should be on the lookout in salvage yards. The engines may be toast, but the remains could be parted.

No, they can't be parted out. Well, in theory anyway, they are supposed to be crushed. However, I know our salvage yards had other plans...

I work at a dealership BTW, and had to "destroy" over a dozen decent vehicles. It was pretty sickening, there were some really decent vehicles. I agree with everyone that this was a pretty pointless program, and just drove everyone deeper into debt.

According to the fine details, anything but the actual frame/shell,and drivetrain can be parted out

Re: Cash For Clunkers.....Figured Out!!!

In the case of the SVX it would be smart to get some piano wire and save all the glass. That's expensive and rare.

Programmes like this are going to be blunt instruments. There will be good cars going down as casualties because people need the money. That's the way it is.
If a good SVX is going down near you don't b1tch about it or about the programme. Buy it and save it.

Re: Cash For Clunkers.....Figured Out!!!

We blew up a bunch of cars so far for the program but they were complete junk. NO subarus at all, and they only ones that lasted the longest were a VW and a couple old 90's F-150.

Care to take that first step yourself, or do you think that your own pollution is trivial? If I thought I was destroying the planet, raping other countries' resources, and dooming the children of tomorrow to massive floods and rabid monkey-robots (or whatever), I would put my money where my mouth is.

Well, I guess you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.

Aside: I know I have a bit of tongue-in-cheek, and I hope you don't construe that as hostility. I respect your opinion; I just think you're wrong.

No, I'm enjoying our repartee. There's enough hostility to go round without bringing it on here. Plus I also have respect for those with deeply held opinions. Right or wrong I respect their right to hold them and to defend them if challenged.

Also, your first point is a good one. As oil users we are all consuming a finite resource that will not be available to later generations when it is all gone. All that's at stake is how profligate we are in its use. We could all do better.

I'm no tree hugger, but here at home we have high insulation, use low energy lights everywhere, anything we can do to cut down on energy use. Unnecessary energy use I should say. I work in an industry that can and does cut heating bills for buildings in half. That's a lot more energy saving than running a diesel or a hybrid car.

Also I do share your frustration with politicians and taxes. Here in Ireland we are being royally screwed with new taxes. Nobody minds paying a fair share but it's galling when they dress up the taxation as part of a "green" agenda to sugar the pill, when you know they just want the money and there are hundreds of "greener" things to do if they were really serious about it.

Let's agree to disagree on this one before we use up all the cliches.

Joe

There are those who love the SVX like we do, and then there are people to whom it is only a means of transportation, another vehicle. And an SVX giving trouble and needing expensive parts could well be like a millstone round the neck of somebody who has no money.

And if we needed any reminder that the SVX is not an attractive proposition to everybody, we need look no farther than our own Cars for Sale forum. An SVX can be on there for months, on an enthusiasts' site, with no takers.

Just look at Solar's ad, probably the nicest Pearlie bar none:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=50330

After months it eventually sold to a kid with all the goodies removed.

We would like to see them all saved, but the truth is obvious; very few [OK Earl's different! ] can do more than care for one or two cars. We need to respect the financial situation of people who have to let them go.

Not everybody thinks like we do.

Joe
