Re: Simultaneous overheating and loss of A/C

There is no evidence of anything nasty like a head gasket. I am not losing water or boiling over. I just run half way up to the red line and the air quits working until I take one of the previous mentioned remedies. Cooler weather the last couple of days has "solved" the problem for now.

Yes, both fans run.

Larry, Prancer is running fine, just needs more exercise.

Re: Simultaneous overheating and loss of A/C

I just sent an e-mail to SVX ROO with a scan of the engine cooling section of the SVX Shop Manual for the '92 models. I thought that I'd upload it here for anyone who wants it.

Re: Simultaneous overheating and loss of A/C

this is very funny. I was doing a hill country drive with some of the svxers in san antonio. I started overheating and cooling down almost instantaneously. It would go all the way to hot then just go right back down. I replaced the thermostat thinking that would be the issue. It got me back to dallas with no issue at all, but as soon as I pulled into the city limits, my temp started rising...and as mentioned...the AC would blow HOT HOT HOT air.
I finally drove it around for a while after that with no issue. finally, after driving for 15 minutes one day it started doing it again. I decided that I should go get a new radiator...and went ahead and replaced the whole AC system, because the parts were all showing like they needed to be changed. they were leaking, the expansion valve was clicking, and the compressor was trying to go out.
However, after fixing all of that, it did it again. Only one time though. Mind you, the temp here in dallas when it happened was pushing 110.

Any more ideas?

Re: Simultaneous overheating and loss of A/C

Are you sure that the fans are working at the time that the overheating occurs?
Could be spasmodic... a possibility.
A strange one... But always a logical reason.

Re: Simultaneous overheating and loss of A/C

Soo. Since I've been through every coolant fix in the world... Here's some SVX knowledge:

A) A/C compresser is shut down by the ECU when the engine temp is hot (not sure the exact temp
B) If you're not loosing coolant, you're getting extra heat in the system somehow. An SVX has a quite exceptional coolant system and can keep a well functioning car at temp with less than 2/3rds of the coolant capacity.

C) It's your headgasket.

Sucks I know, I'm about to replace mine on my SVX, but apparantly it's pretty common on high mileage SVXes. Failure mode is to allow combustion gasses into the cylinder, without any coolant in the exhaust, or oil coolant mixture.

My car started with the same symptoms. Never all the way to red, increasing RPM would decrease temp. It would be once every few months that it acted up. Then once a week. Then every time the car for longer than an hour. Then every time I drove the car for more than a half hour... My problem got significantly worse when I blew that crap plastic endtank up on the radiator and the temp gauge spiked.

One of the reasons I think this problem is hard to diagnose is that you if you pressure test the coolant system cold, it will typically test fine. I even had a "block tester" kit from Napa test negative (tests for exhaust gasses present in the coolant) when this problem was just starting.

Easy way to tell: Completely remove the thermostat, beat on the car, see if it still overheats.

(by the way, all of this is assuming that you can tell if your loosing coolant, know how to properly bleed the coolant system, know how to check if the fans are operating correctly, and all other basics. sometimes its something easy. I replaced every component of my cooling system including the water pump, which looks fairly indestructible, to the radiator hoses..)

Re: Simultaneous overheating and loss of A/C

I think you are right Greg

It's going to be the head gasket
