svx accident story and repair questions

I had an accident in my svx today. my tire blew out on a curve and my donut was ineffective so I had to be towed. I may have to have my control arm replaced (what the tower said) and also my rim is shot.

here's what I need to know

should I buy one new rim and four tires or four new rims and sell the three oem (i will get cheap ones)

and I need to get those steering parts so what do you guys think the damage is there?

my mechanic has an svx so he can fix them.

but is it worth it, or should I part it out?

There are enough of them in scrapyards already - you can get any steering parts you need pretty cheap. Also check the for sale forum here - plenty of them are being parted out that you could acquire parts from.

Aftermarket rims are pretty easy to get complete with a set of tires. One used svx rim is also pretty easy to get and probably your cheaper option - they are regularly listed here for sale or on ebay.

It's worth it! Don't part out a car for such a small amount of damage.

Your biggest cost here is going to be new tires. You can easily pick up a used rim and control arm for under $100.

Is there any other damage? Even if the ball joint and tie rods are damaged, you're looking at another $150 for NEW parts.

Definitely not a cause for parting.

I'm buying a car with the exact damages you have. A slightly bent control arm, and possibly tie-rod. I'll be driving it about 200mi from where I'm buying it.
Minor suspension damage is nothing to repair. A control arm is 3, admittedly large, and tight, bolts. The tie-rod is best done wherever you get it aligned, as they'll have to loosen those components anyways.

Fix it, don't scrap it. It'll only cost you $300-600 if you have it all done.

thanks for your prompt responses. I won't part. I was nervous.

I will not have trouble with parts and labor and I needed new tires anyway.

anyone want to buy 3 good and one bad rims? I want different ones anyway.

Sound good man. I was a lil suprised to read that you were considering parting out the car after your previous posts showed alot of excitement for your new baby. Hope you get a quick fix and its back on the road soon.

if I can get aftermarket wheels for cheaper I would rather get those and sell the oem to recover some of my costs. think that could happen?

Since this is fast becoming a request for parts I've created this thread in the parts wanted forum:

oh. shiiit.

they got it up and here's what i'm going to need to get done:

ON THE LEFT SIDE:
driver's side strut
driver's side spindle
driver's side control arm

left front and rear rims.

four new tires. and probably four new rims because now i'm down to only two oem rims.

power steering hose (probably) or cooler (less likely)

rear rotors and pads.

So... what can I do and what is this going to cost me? My guy says the front is probably going to take about $7-800. not counting the other stuff.

I need help because we are quickly approaching my spending limit.

Sounds like they looked for everything wrong, not just problems related to your accident.

I'd ask for the measurements they found on the rear rotors and pads (and the factory specs). Are they already bad, or do you actually have several thousand miles left?

Same with the P/S hose and cooler: Were they actually damaged in the accident, or are they just showing signs of a slow leak (common problem in many SVXs at this age). In other words, if it had a slow leak before and it didn't bother you enough to fix it, why do you have to do it now?

Which hose? If it's the low-pressure hose that runs between the cooler and the P/S pump, you can replace that yourself easily. For that matter, if the P/S cooler really is bad, you can easily replace that yourself too. That would save you the labor charge at least.

If two of your rims (wheels) are good, why replace those?

I'm sure I saw a post not too long ago with someone offering used OEM strut for next to nothing. Also something you can get at a scrap yard cheap. Often time you can just put on pads even if the rotors are scored or warped. They'll wear to fit the rotor but just won't last as long. You can take a coarse sand paper to the rusty edges to get rid of a lot of the scrapeing sound should you have it and it bothers you.
