Head Stud Development

I'm starting a thread for this since there is so much broken up discussion about the issue. Currently I believe that DB Tom (dune buggy Tom) and myself are getting costs to do these custom from ARP. Some questions we need to ask of everyone interested is what diameter do you want? I believe we should look into 11 mm stock replacement studs and 14 mm studs, which will require block tapping and head drilling, but will be much stronger of course. My question is who is interested and what size are you interested in? We also had a member who said they have the facilities to make studs at a more reasonable price (tapping and heat treating equipment). Let me know ASAP if you are interested. So far I have the following people solid.

TomsSVX
Tom007??
cdigerlando

Let me know if you are definitly interested, for a reasonable price.

Studs

Tom:

This was the last e-mail that was sent. I have not heard back yet. I would prefer to prototype these studs before buying a crap load of them. If you like I can purchase a set and have them sent to your address, provided they can appropriately answer my questions below. If they work for you, you could pay me for the cost of the studs plus whatever shipping and taxes. Then I'll take orders for the rest and ship them to everyone. So if you want another set just pay me extra and I'll ship you another set. I'm not looking to make a profit here, just cover my direct costs.

If they cannot answer my questions I will see if we can get these done custom by one of our members who I will mention later if he gives me permission. I don't know how long this would take. If its too long we can skip you for now and I will check the studs prior to heat treating. Tom007 wants larger diameter bolts. If we get them custom we may be able to get everyone what they want, provided that our member can handle this much volume.

The e-mail I sent yesterday afternoon:

I have not bought from you before. The ATP7.700-2LUGB, APR2000 stud is I believe used in the 2002 Subaru WRX stud kit, so it should have the correct 1.25 TPI bottom thread. If you can verify that the ATP7.700-2LUGB, ARP2000 is the correct stud for this car application and that the bottom thread pattern is the same for the ATP6.750-2LUGB then the studs should work for our application. We can wait till 8/31. Also are the materials the same (ARP2000) on both studs?

From what you will have in stock I will put together 4 kits consisting of the following, provided the bottom threads match our block threads:

8 pc's ATP7.700-2LUGB
8 pc's ATP6.750-2LUGB
16 pc's APN12, 12pt nut
16 pc's APW995N, Washer

Thanks

Chuck D.

I'm in for the studs. I'd prefer that they be proven first, as my build is not on the "fast track" that YT's is

Tom:

Why don't you order 1 set from ARP direct. Try them out and let us know if they work. I will probably do the same here soon, but I'm sure mine won't go in as soon. My time table has changed so I'm in a bit of a rush too. If they fit then SVXRide can use the part numbers to order them direct too. I think Tom00799 is going to go with bigger studs.

Good luck.

I don't know. I am trying to call him today. Do you want me to order for you? Not including shipping and taxes the cost I have seen is $339.84. I want to verify the TPI on the bottom thread of the short stud, then I'll order. Just let me know what you want to do.

Yes I know. But the last time I talked to them about 6.75" studs they said they were 1.5. I hopefully they will be reachable on Tuesday.

Maybe some forged 9.5 cr 97mm pistons could get you on the fast track.

You could give him a completely rebuilt motor... he'd still take a year and a half to "rebuild" it But he doesn't waste any time when it comes to skinning the doors of other people's SVXi
