format it
It's been awhile, but how long should it take to format a hard drive? It seems like a process measured in minutes not hours. (its a 80 gig pata dell 7200rpm 8mb cache deal btw)

Depends on if you are doing a quick format or a complete format. A quick format will take mere seconds while a complete format may take 30 minutes or more.
If the format seems to stall then there are likely bad sectors...especially if it's a Maxtor drive.

the geek at work replaced the hard drive of my home pc and he said it took several hours...it was a 250gb one though.

Maxtor definitely sucks! I have had several of theirs go bad in less than a year. This one though is a dell oem unit. I am about to call it quits with this puter. I tried another working drive from my main unit and my problem puter wouldn't recognize it, tried to format it and then just hung. It must be time for an upgrade.
