I am a SVX owner now

I don't know if this is good or not, but I recently acquired a 94 SVX for a little less than $1000. The car has 123K miles on it. It runs and drives. The interior is in good shape, exterior is so-so. The car still drives good, but the owner did tell me the AWD is starting to go. As a safety precaution, I just put the car in FWD since I care more about reliability than AWD. I drove the car 120 miles back home, no problem except the auto tranny acts up when it is super cold. It just doesn't shift when it is cold. Also when it gets hot, I notice a slight RPM rise in between shifts. I guess the tranny is starting to go huh?

What do you guys think, good deal or bad? This is my winter beater, my commute is 2.5 miles each way in the morning.

Only problem I can see are

#1 Slight water leak in trunk
#2 Dull paint
#3 Fluid leak at the valve cover and some wet spots at the diffs. I think I saw a puddle the size of a fist in one day.
#4 Couple burnt bulbs inside the gauge cluster
#5 Loud blower fan
#6 The auto tranny problem
#7 Perhaps awd problem?
#8 Four bald tires

The goods are
#1 No rust
#2 Good cross drilled slotted rotors with 65% meat on it
#3 Clean interior
#4 Quiet engine
#5 Straight body
#6 New timing belt and front axles

Driving with the car in FWD mode for long periods of time is probably worse on the tranny than just leaving the fuse out.

It would appear that you are looking for opinions, so that I will give you mine.

You have not made a good choice if your requirement is simply a winter beater/hack. It will cost you money. On the other hand if you want a hobby and an interest in a car, you probably have a good buy, depending on your enthusiasm for cars. Do some reading here and note how many are attached to a rather special vehicle.

I figure I just need to use it to move from point A to B. I have other new cars, so this is purely a winter car for me. It's a cool car, but I don't cream my pants for it. I just hope I can make it without having to do any major repairs.

How will driving it in FWD cause more damage than AWD?

The major issue is imposing an extra load on the front differential, but the issue is debatable and much depends on how hard you treat it.

I would check out the How-To Documents and do some reading. One of the best ones for you now, even though you have already bought the car is to read about buying a used one. This will give you some ideas on what to look for and what to fix. Look at this link.

That sounds like a good deal, and I hope you can bring it back up to shape for a long life. We are here to help those who need it.

Just try not to spin the front wheels too much. So far mine has survived without incident, but you can destroy your front dif.

If the AWD is "going out", it is probably something as simple as transfer clutches or an electrical solenoid. They aren't cheap fixes, but they are cheaper than new differentials.

This site is one of the most depressing car forums I've ever been on... After only two months I wanna get rid of my SVX and kill myself.

We drive 10-15 year old cars. Would you rather we tell him everything will be peachy for the next 10-15?

Just want to throw a tiny correction into that, hope you don't mind Ricochet...

to be honest, a new trans will delete a couple of the those problems in one shot. The trans is flaring and your transfer is shot... not to mention leaks.
