I got it thu a file share site. It said it was the final version "Bill Gates Edition"
I can instal like 4 or 5 different version. Home Basic, Business, Home Premium, and Ultimate. I think there is one more. I can not activate it but it sill works. Some of by XP Acer software will not work yet. I guess I will have to wait until the Official release. I would buy one too. It is nice. Steve

I have had an official beta for months and it works great on a 1.8 athlon xp with 1 GB ram. I also have a powerbook and the powerbook has twice the power and options.
I love the mac soooo much more. there isn't as much software, but it's worth it if you do anything video, photo, or music. the cases are hard to get into but it's worth it because they're that much sturdier and long lasting.

I agree that a Mac is a better for audio and visual and has been for years. The Mac was just not pushed onto the world like PC with Windows.
I had an Amiga 2000 back in '86 and never used DOS until I went to a PC in '97. Windows is so far behind tech. Steve P.S. I crashes Vist hard. Hard to reinstall. DO NOT INSTALL Alcohol 120

I'm still over here with a copy of X64 that I haven't even installed. Scared to due to all the driver scares I kept hearing about. My system is 64 and can handle it, I'm just not sure Matlab, Pspice, and the like will be able to.
Have they got the drivers and applications up for X64, or is it better to plung straight into Vista? (I have the ah hem.... same copy of that all-in-one vista disk.

could someone please explain to me WHY Macs are so much better than a PC for audio and video? what can i do on a Mac that i can't do on a PC? if stuff is "easier", that usually means "not as many options/tweakability". i know the software for my guitar processor isn't as extensive (and doesn't work as well based on all the complaining i hear on the forums) for Macs.

Sheesh, I didn't mean to fuel a Mac/Windows thing. To reiterate:
A recent article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution simply mentioned that one of the options available to those who want to pony-up for the gee-whiz features of Vista is to opt for a Mac. Didn't say Macs were superior, only that OS X has been doing most of the same stuff for awhile now. The tech writer for the same paper covers Windows/Mac issues in general proportion to the makes in use: 95%/5%. He occasionally mentions that he uses a Mac at work and Windows, his preference, everywhere else. My (limited) experience has been that folks who prefer the Mac OS were, like me, introduced to it at work; the general public has never been inclined to switch (Apple's pricing and dopey hipster/geek advertising hasn't helped), and this is surely how things will stay. dcb |

I don't fiddle with music or video on my machine, so I don't know about that. Mac was the sole player in my line of work (print design/advertising) for many years, and we still sometimes cringe when we get a file generated on a Windows machine, but that's generally because most Mac files come from pros whereas amateurs usually provide Windows stuff; no reflection on the OS. Plenty of Mac users hand-off lousy files. But that's where the perception that Macs are superior for visual artists originated, 'cos for awhile, they were. Today most graphic arts apps (not talking Word and Publisher here) are available for both platforms, so it's just a matter of personal preference.

so the only reason to get a Mac is to be different (snobby!), and pay more for stuff? i do like iPods, though.

I hate all the new "candy" they are adding. Too much bloat requiring hardware updates and less cycles left over for the applications you actually need.

This may shed a little light on the Mac/PC thing.
The reason that PC took off was due to a "Killer APP" That app was spreadsheet. The accounting community went nuts over it and they all had to have it. The Mac/Amiga's were more for the multimedia end of thing. This was a less demanding market. The audio and video products are better on a Mac due to dedicated programmers. They did not have to add all the fluff that Windows has either. The IPod was to be Apples killer app but it didn't work like the spreadsheet. That is my 2 apples worth. Steve
