Hey Phil, drop me a PM when you want to get together in Milwaukee sometime. I'm sure Lwin would drive up also, if we ask him. Or hell, he may just show up at my door

Yup, Canada is always putting their citizen's health as their top priority above economics

Kind of sums up socialized medicine, doesn't it?

Perhaps you missed the recent post in this thread where I wrote:

I have at no time stated that a socialised medical system is the only way to go. Perhaps I haven't made myself clear. I have seen private health insurance working very well in an open market economy - Switzerland. But for some reason, the system as it has been set up in the USA isn't working.
I don't understand why folks seem to want to make this a US vs. Canada thing. Why not US vs. Switzerland? or US compared to UK? or Japan?

As for switching to the asbestos subject, last I heard, the US Congress was still working on a ban. When did the bill pass?

Stop making me laugh so hard!

What is really funny is that I have yet to see anything written about real triumphs or achievements. Surely you can't go that long without having done something positive that everyone can agree on?

I'm still impressed with him color coding terror.

Quite a dog-gone accomplishment if you ask me.

You were the one who compared HIRSP to Canada's health system, I've just been reacting to that.

That's a funny story, actually. The Fed government banned it in 1989, but it was overturned in 1991. However between 1989 and 1991 every state had passed their own ban on it and every worker's union passed union rules refusing to work with it. So when it was repealled in '91, it was only a token measure. Nothing actually changed from what was banned in '89. The overturn simply ratified the notions of state based control.

My aunt is Joann Meyers. You can say that I am a little bitter at Canada's continuance to pump up their asbestos industry, so sorry if I lashed out.

1984: Norway bans asbestos, with a few exceptions, updated in 1991
1986: Denmark bans chrysotile asbestos.
1986: Sweden introduces the first of a series of bans on chrysotile asbestos.
1988: Hungary bans amphibole asbestos.
1989: The United States bans asbestos, but the ban is overturned in 1991.
1989: Switzerland bans all types of asbestos.
1990: Austria bans chrysotile.
1991: Holland introduces a series of chrysotile bans.
1992: Finland introduces a phase out ban on chrysotile.
1992: Italy bans chrysotile.
1993: Germany bans chrysotile, having banned amphiboles earlier.
1993: Croatia bans crocidolite and amosite.
1995: Japan bans amphiboles.
1996: France upsets Canadian suppliers by banning chrysotile.
1997: Poland bans all asbestos.
1998: Belgium bans chrysotile.
1998: Saudi Arabia bans all asbestos.

Doug, your bitterness is understandable, but misguided. surely Canuckistan, the fairest and, dare i say, most perfect piece of civilization to grace this world, cannot be responsible for hurting anyone.

deep down, you know it must be the work of the Devil Bush.

[sarcasm]You are probably right, I tend to go through life with blinders on. I only see things that my party wants me to see and blindly follow without any thought.[/sarcasm]

Or wait, that's the definition of a Democrat

Ever wonder why no unions ever support Republicans? Its because someone told them decades ago that they can't and they've never stopped to think about it for themselves.

All right, who wants to start a good 'ol fashioned flame war? Come on!!

On second thought I think I'll make myself a Brandy Old Fashioned and just turn this dang computer thingy off.

First off, there is no single Canadian healthcare system. I simply stated that the State of Wisconson's HIRSP had similarities to the Province of Ontario's plan. You clarified that. Thanks.

Frankly, I've never really thought much about asbestos. Once it has been installed in a building and as long as it isn't touched, then it doesn't pose much of a threat. Since I don't work with it at all, and home renovations are usually limited to a coat of paint or new carpets, it just wasn't on my horizon.

I did another one of my "random searches" and found it surprising that up to and including 2005 (last stats I could find) the US continues to import asbestos, albeit in ever smaller amounts. Asbestos mining in the US stopped in 2002.
http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pu...asbesmcs06.pdf

Ah... I think I understand the problem with banning asbestos in Canada. Might be a bit difficult for non-Canadians to understand, but I'll try. Asbestos is mined in Quebec. What Quebec wants, it usually gets in order to off-set threats of separation. Heck, there's even a town in Quebec called "Asbestos" which sits on the western world's largest known deposit of chrysotile. So I don't see a solution to this problem in the near future. Asbestos continues to be a big money maker for the Quebec economy. Only when everyone stops buying it will Quebec stop producing it.
