Oh boy :(
Hi there, just found this site looking up SVX stuffs So here is my situation...
I am driving down the road..all of a sudden all the lights on my dashboard come on and my car starts to slowwwly die. This has happened a few times. another thing is there are times I have to open my car door to start my car! Right now my car is not starting....the battery (brand new one) is dead. When I jump it, it runs for a second..then does the same thing ( all the lights on the dash come on and then poof!) any suggestions?? BTW, its a 1992 SVX 2 door thanks in advance! |

Welcome to the site, Mr. NEWSVXOWNER!
First thing is to remove your alternator and get it checked out - the SVX has "issues" with alternators.... ps. all SVXes have only two doors

Do either of your sun visors have broken wires? Check it out and post again.

well, that would have to be MRS. NEWSVXOWNER So, tommorow I am taking it back the the owner who is going to do some troubleshooting on it. Its driving me nuts! I have had this beautiful green car, that is breaking down on me every other day! I cant use the security system....the CD player...because I think that is what is causing all these problems..SO now I know that its NOT the security system OR the CD player because it did it with them both off
One week after I bought the car...the trans axel (sp) went poof! The guy that I bought it from replaced it though *WHEW* So here I am now wondering WHY my car is dying. So, the alternator can cause all the dash lights to flicker and the car to just die..(this happened to me on the freeway) ? This is my second battery guys! thanks again!!! (and yes, I LOVE THIS CAR! its fully loaded...all leather....leather dash...etc *SIGH* ) |

yes the pulley on the alt spins to create electric energy to feed the battery. if battery is not getting feed it will still run until no juice is left. result dead battery. good alt and good battery = power forever bad alt and good battery = power for short life of battery eventually dying good alt and new battery = power forever with no prob. bad both is bad luck sorry.

When the alternator does not put out enough electricity, the various electrical systems in the car get upset...hence the warning lights. They are not getting enough power to run properly. Replace the alternator, and as a precaution replace the battery at the same time. A weak battery will kill a new alternator. Dave |

i u pull it just test it and if it reads not bad throw back in and troubleshoot some more. u dont want to spend 200 when u dont need to. i dont know cost never had to replace mine. though i thought about upgrades as in the stinger ones for people who have systems. when i bought the car and a little now i feel a higher amp alt would help proformance. it was pricey at 600 bones.

I've had alternators 'tested' at auto parts stores many times. Honestly, I don't know why they bother. A couple times the test has shown the alternator to be fine, but replacing it fixed the problem. You'd think they would just sell more alternators if they stopped doing the tests.

I second the sun visor theory. Mine affected the stereo, dash lights, cabin lights, starting, dash controls, etc. All better, now.

I used to work at an auto parts store and can honestly say that I had no frickin' clue what I was doing when I tested alternators ....I do now, of course My advice is to take these free tests with a grain of salt. And, if possible get a second opinion at another store. Dave |

try unhooking the battery over night since the alt install and see if that will reset and help your other prob.

Yes, sun visor. There are two little wires that make the light go on for the mirror. If one of them is broken, it can make all kinds of things go wild. Pop off the little cover and look to see if the wires are ok. If not, that may be your problem.
