You should read the "MIT Guide to Lockpicking".

Just for it.

Why not get a proper one, then you could ride to the pub

What the story (intentionally, I believe) fails to mention is that this does not affect all U-locks or even all circular locks. Only a specific few models of Kryptonite locks can be opened in this way.

Other locks with circular keys could probably be opened if a hollow tube of sufficient diameter could be found. This one is just shocking because it turns out that the key's size is almost identical to a ubiquitous item like a Bic pen.

By the way, other locking devices using the same mechanism can be picked in the same way. As I understand it, you can defeat some notebook computer locks with the pen trick as well.

I don't lock my bikes anywhere ever. If I ride to work, I bring my bike into the building with me.

They won't let me take my bike into the pub so I have to lock it.

Well it's not like your bike could get very far - as Harvey said, the thief would be caught while looking for the exit.
