Unhappy transmission not shifting to 3rd and 4th

I'm still having problems with my 92 SVX, the other day i was in
stop-and-go traffic for about an hour and a half when trafic started to move again my car would not shift from 2nd to 3rd unless the rpm was close to 4k, i pulled over and let the car cool down for about an hour and check the transmission fluid, it was very dark (Brown). i got back on the road and it would shift smoothly 1st to 2nd and would not shift to 3rd until rpm reached 4k. i'm changing the AT fluid and removed the pan fearing i'd find metal shavins but luckily, all i founf was a very small quantity of metal grit (sand like) stuff on the magnet at the botton of the pan.
i need to know which hose on the radiator is the in and which is the out to and from the exterior filter; also i removed the exterior filter and it does not look clogged up. does nayone know how to clean the "screen" inside the radiator. and finally, will changing the transmission fluid do any good as far as the shifting into 3rd and 4th gear is concern? is ther anything i can do to repair this problem short of replacing the whole transmission? will adjusting the Brake Band help??

You can try flushing the tranny cooler in the radiator to clean the screen but it is hard to tell how effective it is. If you have the original radiator you are better off bypassing the cooler altogether and getting an aftermarket cooler. The 92s have that screen that clogs and then you are screwed.

Check the how to locker for diagrams of the flow in and out lines for the tranny and radiator

Adjusting the brake band can help if its not too late.

I'd do a few more drain and fills on the fluid - maybe once a week or so since your fluid was so bad looking - to try to thoroughly clean it out.
You can't get it all each time - only about half comes out in a drain and fill.

Good luck.
