Solar posted some pics of damage, I thought I might show one part of the damage to my roof from Francis - really looking forward to Jeanne - she's getting closer now & I'm about 40 miles north of expected landfall, with it passing about 20 miles to the west (of course I'm on the NE side of this one too)

Yeah it leaked all through the house: 2 of the 4 bedrooms, kitchen and living room all have water intrusion issues. I put a patch on that spot, and a tarp on another part (which is now likely to blow away) that had a lot of shingles gone, but the tar paper stayed. State Farm's adjuster still hasn't shown up, so I'm likely to have a double whammy based on current predictions.

My wife works for Wally World and they called her in today (one of her normal days off) to help shut down the store. I've been busy helping neighbors get the loose stuff up and put away. The house is like a tomb once again - Star Trek had transparent Aluminum - can't they make transparent plywood?

We were interviewing people for a job yesterday and one of the candidates was from Ohio...seems she changed her mind and declined after making it through the first round - wonder why?

Batten down the hatches Lee....we'll be praying for you and everyone in the path of Jeanne. It looks like it will come ashore just south of you....but that puts you in the worst quadrant.

Don
thanks Don - solar & funpilot, et al, are all now in a direct line as well. I hope all stay safe.

The projected path may bring even more rain water up your way - can your area handle that?

I set up a process for Hurrican Erin a few years back wherein I called all the people in my shop so we could all rest a little easier knowing our peers were OK. Now it's spread across the whole Air Force base - kinda like a reverse recall for those with a military background.

So far we have dodged the bullets of both Francis and Ivan.
Our rivers were down and the ground was dry for Francis.
There were a few days to dry out before Ivan, and it did its worst in western North Carolina and the Ohio Valley. I guess it all depends on the track it takes as it comes north.

Hang in there guys!

Thumbs up

Glad it's left you in one piece Solar, and the worst is over. For now.

Don, you asked about my friends in the Caymans. I got the following email this weekend, first contact since the hurricane [cat 5 at their site] took everything out. Have a look at the wind speeds!!

<<Hi Joe,
The Treo is not connected yet. I am in an internet cafe in the town centre
where there is power.
Ivan was the worst hurricane ever to hit Cayman; I hear that it was the
worst ever in the Caribbean. There are local reports of measured wind
speeds of 200mph, 208mph and 245mph on government buildings! Most buildings
were damaged, many houses totally wrecked. There are still hundreds of people
in government shelters, no homes to go back to. Many roads have been washed
away. The house we stayed in last year was flooded to 4 feet deep in sea
water. cars and truckes thrown around the roads, some ended up in houses.
One wooded house was blown across the main road.
Our house was flooded to knee height 18 inches. Lots of our stuff was lost
or soaked with salt water and sewage. Rained leaked in though the ceiling
but the roof stayed in place. Salt water through the doors, sewage up
thuough the toilet. The sea rose about 6 ro 8 feet and just flowed across
the narrow part of the island, past where we live. We still have no water,
electricity, phones and we lost both cars to salt water. It was 4 to 5 feet
where we parked the cars outside. Anne's MX5 was completely covered, my
Honda CRV all but the top 10 inches. Ronan was here to help us pile our
stuff higher and higher. One mattress soaked, one we saved. One store
opened after 3 days and had long queues outside. Bread and water was
rationed. Queues are smaller now and less rationing and we have managed,
after 10 days, to get a rental car (all bashed) from Avis.
It is still very hot here, there are no air conditioning units and the
mosquitoes are out in earnest. We don't expect to have water ot electricity
for weeks.
But most important, we are alright, if smelly. What we wouldn't give for a
shower or a toilet that flushed! (We are ciollecting rain water).
Ronan managed to get a flight back to London last Saturday - we spent most
of the day at the airport, the terminal was leaking, the check-in computers
were down and we had to hitch a lift home.
Must go, there are people waiting to use this computer.
>>

So you see, the islands that got the full force were very badly hit.

Just glad they were not hurt, will take a lot of time to get back to normal over there.

Joe

Unhappy Wow!

Thanks so much for the post Joe. Thank heavens your friend (and his friends) are OK. It must be terrible down there. You said he was a teacher....I wonder what the school building/supplies situation is. Maybe we could send them some things from my school if we knew what they needed.

Don, thanks for the kind offer, I will pass it along.

The schools, including Mike's, were severely damaged. Many of the teachers could not face the devastation, and have left for parts less stormy. Those who remain are busy cleaning up and doing what they can.

One estimate reckoned the schools would not be ready till January. With exam classes, Mike is planning to do essential repairs incrementally, and hopes to work with these classes around November. Your heart would sink for them really.

Obviously even repair work will be delayed until the essential utilities, water and electricity and sewage, are restored.

Thanks again for the offer. Maybe they would need books lost to the seawater, I don't know but will ask.

Joe
