timing belts
My advice to everyone who hasn't changed their timing belt in the last 50,000 miles is CHANGE YOUR TIMING BELT. During a trip to see my sister this weekend I was feeling pretty proud of how my little car was doing in the winding "mountain" roads of northern arkansas. Until the timing belt shredded at 110mph shutting me down, 2 1/2 hours from the nearest person i knew at 1:30 in the morning in a town full of bubbas and skeeters.
Any suggestions or help on resetting the cams/timing would be much appreciated as one of my friends and i will be replacing the timing belt ourselves. |

If your timing belt 'shredded' I'd check your water pump. The belt should be good for closer to 100,000 miles. A fault water pump could be the base problem. Your timing belt drives the water pump.

BTW- Most of us would concur that replacing the water pump at the same time you replace the belt is 'cheap insurance'. If you take the time and effort to get that far 'into' the engine, you might as well replace the pump for the $40-50 it costs.
I did. (I did mine at about 110,000 mi's.) Good Luck! -Mark |

Well my car actually has about 142,000 miles, but i'm not sure when the last time the belt was replaced was. I got the car about 2 1/2 months ago. Having to pay for the towing to get it off the side of the road and for the trailer to get it the rest of the way home, and for the belt kinda frustrated me though, because that sets my exhaust back about a month and in turn sets my nitrous back a month, and my wheels and tires and so on and so forth...

Just be glad the 3.3 dosn't have twin cam pullys like the 2.5L's. Alinging the cams is simple, the belt even comes with marks t olne up to it. (I'm losing all spelling ability) Like Mark said check all the pullys, it's also usually a good time to change the cam and crank seals, but if your just trying to get back on the road don't worry about it. The biggest pain is the damn power steering pump and bracket. I can't remember if you have to dissconect the P.S. lines or if you can get the bracket out from under it with out having to. Other than that it's EASY. Good luck.

What bugs me is I had the radiator out and the crank pulley off a week ago, to put on the underdrive pulley, If i had thought about it i could have gone ahead and ordered a new timing belt and done it at the same time.

Ha, Ha, That is a be,ach but at least I tack it you know how to get the crank pully off. You do know that you don't have to pull the radiator to do the job thoe right?

The extra space deffinately makes it easier though.

Maybe, but the extra draining and refilling of the radiator kinda devoids the extra space, don't it?

Another thought
If you haven't done so already spin those tensioners to see if they are noisy.
Leaky seals? good time to replace as well. Timing belt is the beginning. Many other things to do while your in there, if time and location allows. Randy ii |
