collector car insurance

has anyone found an insurance company that will insure our cars as collector vehicles? i searched through old threads and found one on this topic, but it was over a year old and did not produce the answer i was hoping for. my '97 w/ 9500 miles gets driven very rarely and it irks me to carry full coverage on this car through my regular insurance agency. last time i checked, blue book on my car was only $17,000. i consider my car to be irreplaceable and if something ever happened to it, i would almost be insulted by what the insurance company would give me for it. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

My insurance company wanted to know what it could be replaced for (in the same condition) It is insured for that. If I want to drive it, it is full insurance cost. If I want to leave it in the garage, it is only around $12.00 per month. I have all cars and the rest of my insurance through them, so it is a package deal.

I saw an ad for Grundy tonight on the Speed Network. Grundy is an insurance company specializing in collector, hot rod and antique cars. Don't know much else about them tho.

i tried grundy before. they won't insurance the svx.

I think at one point or another we've all tried the collector car insurers. Despite saying that they have no requirements concerning the year of manufacture, you'll soon find out that they'll only insure something 20 or 25 years old. So mine has another nine and a half years to go.

Like Earl, I store mine part of the year for very little money. Of course, Earl has so many of them that he probably has a rotating schedule - he drives one a month and then stores it for the next five.

Doesn't the car need to be (in age) a certain Number of years old before it is considered a collector/ classic??

i would not think the svx would be a "collector" but it depends on the carrier. i have 2 cars with grundy, about a third of being with allstate. BUT, you can only do "pleasure" driving, no work related, no errands (to the safeway, etc.), although there is no milage limit on the pleaure driving.

Technically I think most of the SVXs fit into the collector car profile for most companies as they all offer insurance to "low production vehicles" I think the threshold is something like 2500 sold in a given year. I've yet to find one that would insure mine though and I've tried them all. Found a couple that would insure my BRAT though. I've recently gone with Liberty Mutual for the SVX and my wife's car. They were both substantually less then what I was paying at progressive plus we get the added benefit of if she totals her car in the next 2 years she gets a brand new replacement.

i understand that a 12 to 7 year old svx is not a "classic" car because of its age, but there has to be some company that will insure it as a "rare" automobile. i carry "pleasure use" full coverage on the '97 svx and it runs me $800 annually only to be covered at the limit my insurance company says. there's got to be something better out there.

I have Farmers Insurance. I have found though, you shop for an agent, not the insurance. If you have a good agent, they can do almost anything. If the agent is no good, if you need your insurance, it will be like your agent - "no good".

Yes, I rotate my cars, because I can not afford to have all of the cars insured at the same time. I have only a couple insured to drive, and then after about 6 months, I change it.
