O/T: Lidar and CVTs

Just got my new Car & Driver magazine.

1. Several new cars are coming out with adaptive cruise control, using laser to keep the car a constant distance from the car ahead. Does anyone (who knows about lasers) know if this would have any effect on laser speed detection devices? What a bummer if your cruise control scrambled some cop's lidar, resulting in a ticket for going supersonic when you were actually traveling 55mph.

2. The new Nissan Murano has a 245-hp, 3.5L V6 hooked to an AWD CVT. To my knowledge, this is the first AWD CVT capable of handling this much power and torque (even the Quattro wizards at Audi haven't done this yet). I find myself contemplating - the 3.5L V6 is an offshoot of the V6 installed in Maximas, which originally had the 4EAT transmission. Could it be possible that this CVT might be a potential donor transmission for the SVX?

I'm a fan of CVTs because of the performance and mileage improvements over a conventional automatic. If anyone out on the forum has one of these trannies (yeah, right), and is interested in seeing if it works in an SVX, I'm willing to offer up mine as a transplant recipient to see how it works. In return, you can have my current tranny when the job's successfully completed.

Hey, don't thank me for this selfless act - that's just the way I am.

That is a belt drive tranny with variable diameter pulleys. Right?

Yes, but I think that all of the current CVTs use a metal linked belt instead of the rubber one fitted in the Justy CVT.

Larry, you go WAAAAAAAAAAAY back.

I remember the first DaF dealer in Annandale, VA. Also the last.

Same dealer.

Yep, metal linked belt. I think they're also designed to push, rather than pull, which makes some difference somehow.

Yup, I remember when Fred Flintstone bought his first
Yabbadabbadoomoblie. The early models had gear train problems until they switched over to Spacely Sprockets.
