Learned something new today

Today I was on the phone with a couple of knowledgeable people at the Technical and Performance Division of SOA (a part of the TechLine). These are the same group that reviewed and approved my alternator wiring modification.

Seems there were two differently designed transmission pans for our cars.

The original pan, PN 31390AA030, was designed to be used with the transmission pan gasket. Used by the factory from the beginning of production of the 92's until about 5/1995.

From mid-1995 until the end of production, Subaru started using RTV sealant from the factory instead of the gasket. The tranny pan was slightly redesigned to accommodate this. That part number is 31390AA060

Don't have the exact VIN for the changeover.

I pursued this because svxfiles was going to drop the pan on my 96 Polo to change the internal ATF filter screen and told be someone had already dropped the pan, because it had RTV sealant instead of a gasket.

I told him I bought the car with 42,000 miles and that I have complete records of every service ever done since delivery (with 24 miles) to the original owner, and that nothing was ever done to the transmission. My Mfg. date was 11/1995. This now makes sense and clears up the mystery.

Using a older pan with RTV may not be a problem, but using the newer pan with just a gasket could cause leakage. Svxfiles talked about the gray and red sealant the Subaru uses. I will try and find out if they know what color was used from the factory.

Can any of the OBDII owners confirm this? If your tranny pan has never been dropped, it should have RTV sealant. My pan has never been off and has never leaked a drop. This information may be of use if you ever need a new pan.

Re: Learned something new today

All of the remans I've come across were held with sealant as well. Even at low mileages. Never really thought anything of it to be honest. Figured it was some type of change. I usually always use the gasket and a light bead of silicone on the pan side. Shouldn't need silicone at all on teh transmission side as that's of course a machined flat surface. (or should be unless some moron took a screwdriver to get rid of the stuck on sealant)

Re: Learned something new today

My '97 has an orangish-red rtv sealing the pan. The original owner (my dad) doesn't remember having any transmission service done, at least not in recent years. I'm betting mine has never been cracked open.

I guess that means a transmission service just got moved to the top of my to-do list.

Re: Learned something new today

The pan on my 96 polo has never been dropped either. Regular fluid flushes and recent tranny drain and fill with synthetic by svxfiles.

At 138,000 miles, all is good. Tom did not even recommend changing the original internal screen. Evidentally the screen does not catch that much.

Re: Learned something new today

I've done some drain n' fills since I've had it, but at 153,000 it's probably time for me to do the screen too.

Re: Learned something new today

More information received from my friends at Tech Performance at SOA concerning my 1st. post.

The changeover to the new pan was approximately May 31, 1995 and continued until the end of November, 1996.

1994-1997
Note: Production date 19930801 reads as 8/01/1993

Transmission Model #920972 and up will take the new pan starting in 1995, but it seems that the production dates overlap.
It's going to be determined by the transmission number, not the VIN
for that year, so there may not be any real rhyme or reason to it, and appears to be completely random.

So whenever you replace a transmission with another 4EAT, the transmission number should indicate which pan it originally came with.
