1994 L / low idle when coasting and braking causes engine to die

Desperate for any help and advice is very appreciated in advance, i have a 1994 Svx L been sitting in the garage for little under 2 years and recently brought her back to life, tuned up and fluids all replaced, filters with some, car runs great until at low idle between 250-500 rpm's when coasting/slowing down, and apply little or allot of braking will cause the meter to jump and then the exhaust system i hear goes vroom, vroom ,vroom and the engine dies, i turn off the key switch it back over and its fine every time, this is only when coasting and slowing down never when idling and sitting

First i thought it was the idle control assembly replaced that twice and also cleaned them both out no improvement , took it to the dealership and there answer was the new battery i put in recently not the case at all, they said the system was doing a thorough check of the system, no improvement been almost a week trying to work with it thinking i may push through the problem not happening

Mechanic i work with said i may need to replace idle control valve but he's unsure the cause of the problem.

thanks and apologize for the long rant

Could be the MAF. Are you getting a CEL?

Re: 1994 L / low idle when coasting and braking causes engine to die

I would start by re-soldering the MAF. I've done it for two sensors and works great.

I've had fluctuating idle like you describe, but only in N and P.... see this thread:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=62757

Never figured this one out, though. I have a spare inhibitor switch, but since it's done it only twice never got around to try....

Good luck,

/T

Re: 1994 L / low idle when coasting and braking causes engine to die

Rpm meter fluctuates only around 250-500 never goes any higher and when in N and P its fine but when i put it in D or R and also normal driving that's when the idle problem hits always when im going less then 5 MPH and slowing down from a high speed or coasting, once the idle gets down to the 250-500 range that is when the meter gets jumpy and fluctuates

i'm pretty mechanically challenged and im not sure the reference of a MAF or CEL means

Re: 1994 L / low idle when coasting and braking causes engine to die

thanks -

Gonna try and figure out the master air flow and ive gotten 2 code errors

Verified check engine light has been on and off
Code 22- knock sensor LH
code 28- from memory RH knock sensor

these codes shouldn't affect the problem i am having with low idle fluctuations but gonna replace them over time anyways
