This is very cool, will it intimidate a shop mechanic to do a proper job?

Impressive! I love it!
Your first lettering example is awesome, should look great when illuminated.

Re: My attempt at making some long-grain... thoughts?

Thanks for the comments guys.

Seems like everyone has their own style or design idea they like for the letter face/font. If these cars qty weren't so limited it would be cool to do a small run where you could have interchangeable plates that are extremely cheap to swap out on occasion if you felt the desire to do so as well as alter/change colors on the flip of a switch. Though it's hard telling how and or if this thing will hold up in the summer heat with the engine running and how that'll play out... but it's not really intended to just be there for the DD as it is for more of a show purpose I guess.... especially since not very many people will see it anyway. Mostly for funzies.

I'll post pics of the entire engine bay later this summer when the refresh is complete and everything isn't so nasty looking

Re: My attempt at making some long-grain...

Since summer is now here it is time for me to finish some things up. The Mk.III engine cover... the final and last revision is done. Just ready to be wired up. Even though I really liked the mysterious and flush look of the previous flat embedded design, this yields more room for the LED panels underneath so I can properly seal them, as to avoid any electrical ruckus to come from having this actually installed in the future. Plus, since it isn't tinted (but still dark) you can actually see the text even if the engine isn't running or illuminated. I apparently have too much time to think about stupid stuff like this or ways to go around making it better.

It went from white, to red (on accident actually, they sent me the wrong LED panels) to the final White/Blue you see now. I actually want to say I prefer the white illumination more but... I guess the blue is better fitting for the car since it is blue after all. Now that it's done I can focus on the other ideas involving grains of rice that have been filling my head as of recent. I shouldn't have looked over actually... because now I know I'm going to do it. It's just a matter of when time permits.

Non-illuminted/non-running engine:

Illuminated/engine running

That's a great idea actually. I'll have to try and source a switch that will do just that. I'll line it up with the next mod thing I end up doing, whenever that time comes. Thank you.

A brake pedal switch would work perfectly for this. Just position it so that the hood presses the button down when it's closed, and when you open the hood and the little button is allowed to pop out, it will close the circuit and light it up. Would be very easy to wire up.

Would you by any chance be interested in making another one of these if I sent you an engine cover?

Sounds like the way to go, guess I can pick something like that up at AutoZone?

As far as doing another cover, I'm not completely opposed to the idea just don't have the work space for it at the moment. (cutting through that thick plastic is a noisy and lengthy process) Maybe sometime later this year when I have an actual garage to work in. Did you have something custom in mind regarding the actual text to be used? What kind of condition is your cover in?

Brake switch you can pick up at autozone. The one for the SVX brake pedal has 4 total contacts actually, which are 2 pairs, and both pairs are open when the button is held depressed. If you found one with only 2 wires coming out of it then that will save the work of figuring out which is which, but make sure it has the same behavior.

The cover is in medium-good condition. I have 2 or 3 kicking around actually, I'd have to see which is best. As far as text goes, it would be a lot more simple than what you did. Just like "Subaru EG-33 SVX" or "EG-33 Boxer-6 SVX" or something, and a simpler font. I like the "SVX" at the bottom and the font that you used for that.

Or maybe just exactly what the engine cover said before (or the JDM one). LMK when you have the time/inclination and we'll see what we can work out.

Who are you going to put under the hood to make sure the light goes off when the hood closes?

He could cut a hole in the hood, like the Evo hoods have.

I am contemplating doing that, as it would serve a function, and give a bit of an aesthetic +

Re: My attempt at making some long-grain... thoughts?

I would just use a simple tilt ("mercury") switch, located at the back of the hood, hear the hinge or in the center. I have never seen these fail. You could just place it underneath the hood insulation and it would be completely invisible

Very compact (1/2" X 1/2" X 1-1/4")

Both the 12V and ground are going through the switch and the contact is made internally when the hood is opened. No moving parts to provide corrosion. The same principle used in thermostats in home heating systems.
