Re: help!!!! No start!

Sorry for a late resurrection of this thread.

So here is what we tried so Far:

Replaced coolant Sensor
Sprayed Starter fluid. (smelled Fluid on the tailpipe after)

I really think is its a sensor.

Since we have coilpacks, how do I test for spark?
What / Which Sensor can Cause a no start, and How can i test it with a voltmeter?

I would really hate taking this to a dealer....

Thanks in Advance

Re: help!!!! No start!

It's probably not a coilpack. They are pretty durable despite some isolated boot breakage issues and the car will run (extremely poorly) on 4 coils. You can test them by checking their continuity/resistance with a multimeter, or, barring a multi, spark it off onto a bit of metal (i personally do not do this).
Checking for physical spark will verify the state of your ignitor.

Pull all your sensors (crank ps, cam ps, etc). They could be dirty with some slightly magnetic dust/dirt/crud.

Swap in a known-good battery.

Maybe Harvey or someone with more diagnostic experience can chime in.

Re: help!!!! No start!

Put engine to TDC, pull the timing covers on BOTH sides and verify that you are still in time with the crankshaft. It didnt start with starting fluid which means you have no spark or improperly timed spark/valves.

Unless you are mechanically inclined, taking to the dealer can be a good thing, just let us know before dropping a ton of money on whatever they say. Most things on our cars can be done with basic tools and some time.

Any of the three timing position sensors not providing a signal, will prevent the spark and fuel injection, but if they were the fault it would give a check engine light.
Try starting it for few times, pull a plug to see if it is wet or smell of fuel to know if there is fuel being injected. Put a plug in the coil with the threaded end lying on metal, crank it over, see if there is spark.
Establish this and we can go from there.

Harvey.

Re: help!!!! No start!

Can Someone please point me to the sensor list? and where they are located...

BTW, in checking sensors, do I just plug to voltmeter to the sensor? Continuity only?

Ok... I will remove the driverside front sparkplug and see if it sparks tomorrow.

You can't check the sensors electrically, though you can check their plugs/harnesses. Maybe you mean the coil packs. Just poke both ends with the probes and select the appropriate setting.

As Harv suggested you can just spark it off. Do that by unplugging one from the spark side, put a plug in it, hold it near something conductive, and crank the key for a second.

If you get a spark, assume your cam and crank sensors are working, I guess. Next check the timing belt. Just pull off the side covers and see if it is loose. I think this is unlikely, but it may have jumped some teeth. It would have to miss more than a couple to render the engine inoperable.

Re: help!!!! No start!

So I had it towed to the dealership.

Charged me 2 hours of diagnositic time.

Found out it was the crank position sensor. the one to the left of the alternator.

Grand total. 719 out the door. they wanted 829 originally...

No one in chicago wants to touch this car.... yeesh.... electronics.

I think I wanna ask if this was reasonable. they told me what ate thought the cost was the diagnostic time. Pulled the codes manually because it was obd1. Plus gutted me 200++ for the part.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Re: help!!!! No start!

it sounds like they probably overcharged you. my shop is expensive ($110/hour) and it would be way cheaper here. They shouldn't charge you more than 1/2 an hour to pull codes because all you have to do is plug wires together. The motor's labor time for the sensor is 1 hour. 1 and a half hours plus a 200 dollar sensor shouldn't add up to $720 and especially not over $800. Did they charge you for anything else?

Re: help!!!! No start!

Not really,

that was out the door.

The tech said the diagnostic took 2 hours. so installation plus the parts

I was expecting 500 or so, but Im in a bind. Hence....

Called them Again. Here is the Breakdown.

385 For labor , diagnostic and install
250 on the part
and Tax.

total
719.00 might be a bit less

Had them throw in a good steam clean to stomach it better.... the tax was a killer. Welcome to Chicago.

Re: help!!!! No start!

what's the labor rate out there? $385 is pretty steep, and the only thing you should pay tax on is the cost of the part there is no tax on labor.

Hell no. This is why I generally buy parts before I really source the problem. I know I will need them and having good parts laying around helps with diagnostics. New CPSs can be had for cheap online, "labor" is super easy. The dealer got you with that one, I'm thinking.

Re: help!!!! No start!

Damn, I'm up here in Wisconsin, I could have come down or even know people in the Rockford area that you could have paid for the part and probably a case of beer for me to diagnose and replace it... I even know someone in south Chicago that could have done it for ya... Ask for help anytime, I'm down there quite often anyway.
