However, I like the idea of using the "manual" button on the shifter for this function. The convenient thing is that it's just 2 pins over, pin A6 with the brown and black wire. I'd like to just pull that pin and move it over to A4 but I can't get my freakin arms in there to do it. I've never pulled the dash apart on one of these before.

Is it easy or a mega-huge pain in the ass?
If you were to do this, you would no longer be able to pull the codes for transmission issues. It requires the manual button.
See this thread to understand what I mean:

I think you could swap A4 for A6, and use your rocker switch for the manual mode button to avoid losing manual mode.

To be honest, I rarely take mine out of power mode now...
On the highway when I want it to lock up, I just put on the cruise control, it over rides power mode.

Re: DIY power mode switch?

To do mine I used a pin from a spare climate control unit plug I didn't need.
I went to radio shack and got a cheap SPST Push On-Push Off Switch.

Pushed the pin into the slot on the tcu plug:
Grounded the other end to a screw under the dash into the frame.

Mounted the button the back of the steering wheel.

Later on I bought a spare one of these things:

Removed change holder on right side of steering wheel and replaced with switch panel.
There is a screw behind the change holder that I used as my ground.

So for now it looks like this.

Eventually I am going to grind it down some more to recess the button so I can glue the button cover onto it. Just to damn lazy..
And still debating what to put on the left side switch, maybe on/off switch for a zex kit someday...

Does this apply to OBDII as well? Or are they checked through the diagnostic port instead?

I've thought about doing this, just in case I ever need it (in the snow) someday. It's so rarely used that IMO it would be nicer to have power mode as the button on the shifter and have the manual mode as the additional rocker switch placed elsewhere. Only reason I haven't done it yet, is because it has never been needed in the entire 13 years the car has been on the road. BUT, if it's necessary for diagnostic purposes, then I may go forward with this after all.

Not sure, I have a 92. Sometimes I forget that the later ones are ODBII...
I just know that when I went to wire it to my manual switch I found out that I would loss the tranny diagnosis thing.

Someone with ODBII will chime in shortly I'm sure.

You can put a switch in the circuit (mine is near the kick panel diagnostic connector) to switch between normal and power mode operation from the gearshift switch.

Re: DIY power mode switch?

it's popular in the 91-94 legacys to move the female pin on the 20 pin connector from postion 6 to position 4. This then makes the "manual" button on the shifter turn on the "power mode". Would this work on the SVX TCU? Just wondering, sounds easy.........G

Re: DIY power mode switch?

Yeah, that would work. The only problem is then you can't check for trans codes without swapping it back.

I think some folks have used a small switch to change the "manual switch" to either ground the "man" pin or the "power" pin.
