Question Stearing wheel leather cracking

My brother just bought an pearly 92 svx lsl. It's in ruff shape. We bought it at an auction. It all started when we were at a bagel shop and my brother looked through the paper for an auction. He looked through the list and saw a 92 Subaru and the vin number. He showed me and I looked at the vin and it looked like an svx vin number. We brought it up on car fax and it was an SVX. I told em your buying it. My brother really wanted "a white one with a black top". I waited all week for the auction. Finally we went down to the bronx and we were waited for the gates to open in the rain. As soon as I was able to get through the doors. It was a pearly, all dirty with mud and some. I didn't look at any other car only that SVX. The dumb ass painted the whole engine, alternator power stearing pump, that other pulley and the cracked belt cover with cheap walmart silver paint. The the hood struts where gone (as in bad). And the auction locks the doors so that you can't go in it or start it. At this auction its like buying a cat in the bag. But throught the window we saw 167,000 miles. I checked the oil and it was dirty and the antifreeze was clean. Smaller hit on the rear quarter pannel, some cracking paint on the front bumper. Ohh and the most stupid thing was that the @$$hole sanded down the top spoiler with 100 grit sand paper down to the fiberglass as if he was going to paint it but left the hipping paint on the bottom. I got a little scared when these 3 mexicans came over and wouldn't leave until the bidding started. My uncle said that they don't spend money anyway. feeewwwfff. It was closer to the end of the auction. ................... there was one guy who was biding with against us untill we got to $350 bid and the auctioner said 375? 1......2........3............. Sold. . We were so happy when we won it.
I'm gonna shorten up the story: paid for it, got the key made, paid all the fees, and got it shipped(which was a complete horror show). (A grand total of $846 )First off the we told the guy that we needed a tow truck. He said he had the one that is towed by the fron wheels. I blurted out NNNNOOOOOO WAY, Its awd you can not do that, you mess up the whole car. The dumbass told me OHH ITS OK I DO THAT ALL THE TIME AND NOTHING HAPPPENS. I told him tow truck or nothing.
Well... we drove home listening to my dad bad mouthing it sayin it won't start.......in front of the the svx on the tow truck. And get this, on the way home there was a black svx following ours on the truck. I see her around alot but what a quidence. When we got it home the guy was lowering it off the lift and ................IT STARTED. My dad ate his words.

Under closer inspection the car was a mess, missing interior parts, and tattered but still VERY WORTH IT. It ends up that the spoiler was held down with one nut. The interior smells like dog and dog piss and smoke! But there was two air fresheners. That did absolutely nothing.

Well heres the question. The stearing wheel is completely shot. Bad sun damage and all cracked up. Its discusting. He had a stearing wheel cover on it. I don't like stearing wheel covers. So heres idea. I know the LS-L has the leather wrapped wheel. Can I just cut at the stiching and take it completely off? exposing the stearing wheel like the LS.

I don't think the leather steering wheel has the regular stuff under the leather, but I've never taken one off so I'm not sure, you could always cut it off and see what is underneath it and if it's ugly and you gotta get a new one, you aren't in any worse shape than you were before. Another thing you could do is get one of the good quality stitch-on steering wheel covers, there are some nice ones out there that look really good.

As for the missing interior pieces, come up with a list and post it, I'm sure we can piece it back together. I'd change the oil, along with the front and rear diffs. Don't try to do the transmission yourself, you need a transmission flush machine or you won't get all the old fluid out, it's worth the $150 or so that the dealer will charge for it. (Don't take it to Goofy Lube, dealer service is the way to go, you'll pay more, but you'll get genuine Subaru parts, plus someone who knows what they are doing working on it)

As for the smoke/dog smell, rent a carpet/upholstery cleaning machine, take the seats out and clean them, and do the carpet as well. You might need to make several passes if it's pretty dirty. Once it's all clean, spray the snot out of it with Febreeze. If it still stinks, go to a detail shop and see if they have any pet and/or smoke odor removal spray, or if they can recommend anything. Might be worth it to have them do an odor removal, we charge like $50 for odor removal at the dealership I work at, but it's worth it since the car smells like a new car when they get done.

Yea your right. As of now we did the oil and filter, air filter, vacuumed, armeralled everything. We need new hood and trunk struts, gas filter and the difs and tranny fluid. Theres an aftermarket radio/cd and the cover isn't closing. The ass burned the plastics on the dash with cigarettes or weed, not too bad. There small. Believe it or not the tranny and motor are flawless with an exception to an exhaust leak and the power steering makes some. The exhaust leak sounds like its near the manifolds. At first I thought it was a head gasket because of the exhaust gases. But the exhaust fumes are normal. Thank god! I need to look under it and get the specifics. THE CARPET IS GONE. The furry part of the rug in the rear is gone and the dog pissed on the rug and its starting to rust the floor. People are disgusting.

Another add in. The guy lost the car due to $824 in tickets and fees. I'm glad he did; I'm sure the car is too. It's amazing on how much abuse these cars can take.

My car came with the leather taken off the wheel and You can hardly tell it wasn't supose to be that way. The rubber undernieth is shiny and smooth. Bad part is that it gets slippery when my hands got sweaty. A wrx momo wheel is a good replacement fyi.

When they say "Leather wrappd steering wheel" its just that. I peeled a leather wrapped shifter to find it was EXACTLY like the L model shifter, only black

You can easilly unwrap the wheel, shifter, and brake handle...And do whatever other accents you can in black for a cheap, easy, and stock but diffrent look

If you look at my most recent thread

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=44585

There are interior parts listed, with a lot of pictures. If you see anything you need let me know, these are taking up space, and will all be going soon.

-Dennis

P.S. Post pics of the car already!
