tranny resistor probs

The day after getting back from the meet, my resistor was dead! It acts like the resistor is unplugged and I don't like it! Anybody have a spare one, or know the part number??

I tried cleaning it up then replugging it in and resetting the computer, but that didn't help any..

Are you getting the duty solenoid "A" code in your power light? If you do a search on "resistor" in the old Yahoo archive, Richeich93 posted a substitute from a Legacy, I believe (too bad the tranny doesn't work like the resistor does ). It's much less expensive and usually readily availabe in a bone yard, especially in your neck of the woods.

I bought a resistor from a local electronics supply house for $1.49. Look for a value between 9 and 15 Ohms (I think nominally about 10.5) with a 20 watt rating. May have to do a simple wiring mod since most won't come with both leads out the same end like the OEM part.

Gee, you're paranoid. I just meant there are a lot more Subarus in your area than there are mine, therefore the part should be easier to find -- sheesh!

Angry

Well, I just checked the resistor and it appears to be good.. I checked it with an ohm meter and it has resistance, so I guess my problem is actually Duty Solenoid A.. Where is it located? How soon do I need to fix this?

Duty solenoid A is located in the tranny valve body. It involves a pan drop. It controls line pressure. Without it, you'll get full line pressure at all times. If you like the "slamming" shifts, you can deal with it for a while. I have a diagram of the location on my home computer. I've also posted it to the Network if you want to use the search button.

Screw that search button crap!!

You think this would be a job that I could do Randy, or should I persuade the FINE mechaincs at the Subaru dealership to do it for me? These hard shifts suck big time, plus I don't like being able to put it in 3rd to slow my car down.. If I get any tickets because of this, can I send the bill directly to you?

I don't think so. I've never had the valve body off, myself, but, I wouldn't think a solenoid pack wouldn't be that hard to replace. You might check with John McKenna (svxcommuter). I think he may have the "skinny" on the valve body. There may be others. If so, folks, speak up.

(Sorry, I forgot to send the diagram, and I'm back at work, and they're back at home . . . sheesh, getting old an forgetful sucks!)
