Question P/S switch QUESTION

The switch with a 2 pronged electrical connector that screws into the output line just to the left of the P/S pump: 2 questions...

1. Is this just the sender for the signal that lights the P/S warning lamp on the dash when the belt is broken or you loose pressure? Or is it a more important (and/or vital?) part of the electronic speed sensitive system?

2. Looking at this switch body, with the white writing on the barrel up, which also means that there is, on the back, a dot at the top of the rectangular part where the wires go in, the name of the mfgr. on the upper part of the barrel and the word "Japan 10" on the lower part...

What wire coming out of the switch, left or right, given the orientation as described above, corresponds to the green/white stripe wire on the left side of the pigtail at the plug? The wire on the right side of this pigtail is ablack/white stripe.

Due to 15 years of heat, being sprayed with ATF/ water/ soap, etc. the wires both broke loose when I unscrewed this switch!!!

If, indeed it is just the signal for the warning light it may not even matter which wire is which... I don't want to screw anything up.

Before finding this thread, I retraced your other now very confused thread in order to find reference to ----

“the difference seems to be in the rack and in the electrical do-hickey that screws into the output side of the pump.”

Your statement --- “Please see my question regarding the P/S switch”, within your previous thread, most certainly did not lead me to this new thread.

It would be appreciated if you could put the same amount of effort into setting out your problems, as you expect to receive from those spending time trying to solve them.

I now gather that you have the engine speed system, rather than the road speed sensing arrangement. Unfortunately the manuals I have give no details regarding the switch you refer to.

However I would expect that as you suspect it may be related only to trouble indication. Leave it disconnected meantime pending your next testing.

I have had the same problem happen on a couple of mine. I have soldered them back on the stubs of wire that was still on the unit and it then was fine. I don't know what the function of it is other than a pressure switch. I replaced the O-Rings in that unit as well because it was leaking. PM me it you need any thing else Norm. If you get another one, don't throw it away. I may be able to do a fix to it.

Question Ok: I'm really confused now!

Trevor: my VIN is JF1CX3538NH102125

I have a 1992 4WD LSL with leather, sunroof, power seats, CD, etc. I believe this is what comes in the Touring package: I may be confused.

On Subaruparts.com on the '92 4wd screens I have the shorter of the two high pressure hose assemblies, as is shown in the box at the bottom left on the hoses screen. On the diagram for the steering pump I have the assembly that screws into the pump body that includes this switch listed as (#18), the connector assembly (#16) and the connector (#21). There are O-rings on the connector that seal it to the pump body & allow it to be threaded through part #16. The connector is also the part the flared hard line attaches to...

Earl: I'm gonna' try to fix the switch: can you help me with the wires as described in my original post on this thread?

Thanks, again, guys!

Sure Norm. When my wires broke off, there were a couple of short wires left. I stripped them and soldered the wires together and then used liquid electrical tape to seal them. That worked good for me both times I had to do this. The O-Rings were standard ones and I looked through my kit and found some that were very close, or I went to the auto store and got the same size. I don't remember. If that is not going to work for you, let me know.

Lightbulb Earl: Which wires are which?

Earl: As the switch is described in my initial posting: which wire corresponds to the green/white stripe wire (left side) on the plug's pigtail?

?#2: A GENERAL question about O-rings: don't they need to be a certain composition, diameter & thickness? Especially in a high pressure situation (as in the P?S system high side?)

Cheers!

A simple on/off switch of any sort has no polarity in any shape shape or form, so that it should not matter which wire is to which.

Question The problem is...

... I don't know for a fact if this actually is just a "simple on/off switch". It shows as the same part number whether you are on the electronically controlled speed-sensitive steering diagram or the rpm controlled, both 2wd & 4wd for all years.

I'm waiting for Earl (or anyone who can) to take a look at this part
#34428PA000 and let me know which side of the switch itself the green/white wire (left hand side at the plug in from the pigtail) is supposed to be connected to...

My wires pulled out: this switch has a dot at the top of the rectangular (oval?) part, a manufacturer's name on the body at the top rear (on mine there is also some illegible white printing on the top), and "Japan 10" on the body at the bottom rear.

For the $70 replacement cost I'd like to try to reattach the wires correctly as I have no reason to believe there is anything wrong with this switch.

Thanks, again.

Check it with a test lamp or an ohm meter. It is apparently a pressure switch pure and simple.
