codes 22 and 32

right following on from the 4ws fault it used to flash the code for the rear wheel steering speed sensor, we changed the sensor and loom as it all comes built up and we also had to drop the gearbox sump and valve body as the plugs went through to various sensors inside the box as well but it worked and we no longer have that fault code, we do now how ever have codes 22 and 32 which i think are the front and rear steering angle sensors.
now i think i read somewhere that they have to be synchronised so does anyone know how you do that? also the steering wheel is about 45 degrees out would this have any effect on the sensor at all.
any help is much appreciated!

I do not have data on this, but if the steering column as well as the wheel is offset when the front wheels are straight ahead, this will most certainly upset the issue in a big way. Rear control is via a sensor on the column and this obviously should be set accordingly.

What is involved should be able to be checked by following your nose.

Hi Markyboy,

If the steering wheel is not straight then that would definitely cause a problem. There is a sensor on the steering column down behind the brake pedal. This sensor tells the 4WS unit where the steering wheel is pointing. The control unit will get upset if the column position doesn't match up with the wheel position.

This thread might be of help to you, from page 2 onwards. It's the only real troubleshooting anyone here has done with regard to 4WS. Be sure to read right to the end because we took a few wrong paths along the way.

By virtue of being the only person in the UK to have worked on one, you are now the UK 4WS expert. If you don't mind me asking, where was the rear wheel steering speed sensor located and what drives it. Is it different from the normal VSS1 in the transmission and VSS2 in the front diff?

hi phil,
the sensor was the one at the rear end of the gearbox just about where the prop comes out and looks like a crank sensor i.e hall effect
the only downside is you can't just replace the sensor you have to do a small section of loom as well as draining the box and dropping the valve body from inside as there are plugs on various solenoids so it's not quite straight forward.
i will read that thread many thanks for that and will report back what ever i find.
