New guy and a lot of questions!

Note to lists

Howdy all. I’m new to this SVX thing, but have loved my Legacy since mile one. Scoobies kick butt. Instead of going for the spec.B, I opted for something to complement my Legacy GT.

I’ve got about a million (maybe a few less) questions about the SVX in general and about specific mods and would appreciate your input. I’ve scanned the sites and gather some great info, but it is decision time about what to order. Here goes!

1. TIRES-It came with nearly new Bridgestone Potenza RE92s 60s which are already on eBay. I found a smoking deal on some Eagle F1s through TireRack. I know they are way overkill for the SVX, but the price was right and they look incredible. What have you folks run with good luck?
2. STAGE I-I’m not too interested in the cash outlay for the turbo- or super-charger, or the Stage II or III kits. Have any of you used the ecutone electronics upgrade? http://www.ecutune.com/svx-stage1.htm I’m curious how it compares with others on eBay for far less $. To go with it will be a cold(er) air intake from http://svx-motorsport-accessories.st...rformance.html They have a few kinds available and seem to have a great reputation. From what I have been able to gather, there is no need for the resistor nipping (behind the battery) if the ecutune kit is used. Thoughts? Experience?
3. FLOOR MATS-I thought this would be a quick and easy process. Have you had any luck with reasonably priced carpet or carpet/rubber mats that match the gray in the 94 interior? Is a custom set the ticket, or is there a good aftermarket product that fits well?
4. SHIFT KIT-This kit leaks cheap, easy to install, and useful. http://www.smallcar.com/svx/tsk.htm Anyone done it? Is it needed it the stage I mods above are done?
5. TRANSMISSION COOLER/FILTER-I’ve seen a number of different coolers in pics but haven’t found anyone who could tell me which one works to quell the cooling problems in the SVX. I’d like to do it right the first time. I’ve also seen an external filter. Is this really necessary? Have most folks used the gauge pods? http://svx-motorsport-accessories.st....net/inac.html.
6. ALARM KEY FOBS-My car came with none. Subaru seems to still sell them at $50-$60 each. Another choice seems to be eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...4961403&rd=1,1. Has anyone used this and achieved success? I sure like the size.
7. PAINT-Aside from having my local dealer make me a small batch, where might I find touch-up paint for the exterior (blue)?
8. SERVICE HISTORY-I’ve had no luck finding service history records for the car. I tried all dealers in the areas where the car spent its life. Monday I call Subaru for assistance. Any thoughts?
9. DRIVER’S SEAT COVER-Any ideas where I can find a stock seat covering? This one is in tough shape and needs replacement. Subaru wants $450 for the one.
10. HANDLING-Has anyone found good luck with particular springs/rates? Drop spring kit? Struts?

Are there any specific sites I should know about for stock and (light) performance parts?

Thanks all. I hope this list turns out to be like my motorcycling lists. I’ve discovered some great folks there in the last decade or two.

Here is a photo of a trans cooler located under the battery compartment near the drivers side wheel well. Go to the "how to" and you will find more info on this upgrade.

1. TIRES-It came with nearly new Bridgestone Potenza RE92s 60s which are already on eBay. I found a smoking deal on some Eagle F1s through TireRack. I know they are way overkill for the SVX, but the price was right and they look incredible. What have you folks run with good luck?

Tires are entirely personal preference. I like Azenis RT-615, but thats just me...

2. STAGE I-I’m not too interested in the cash outlay for the turbo- or super-charger, or the Stage II or III kits. Have any of you used the ecutone electronics upgrade?

Yes, Ecutune is the BEST. Even Stage One is a vast improvement. Ebay ones are crap, unless they are selling the Ecutune kit. Air Intakes are a bit of a debate, I have one because my Airbox Exploded, but any cold air or ducted kit will work very well.

3. FLOOR MATS-I thought this would be a quick and easy process. Have you had any luck with reasonably priced carpet or carpet/rubber mats that match the gray in the 94 interior? Is a custom set the ticket, or is there a good aftermarket product that fits well?

Custom or universal, no one makes large quantities of SVX specific mats, other subaru mats should be close.

4. SHIFT KIT-This kit leaks cheap, easy to install, and useful. http://www.smallcar.com/svx/tsk.htm Anyone done it? Is it needed it the stage I mods above are done?

Helps older trans. not very effective if your trans. is good, IMHO

Yes, any trans. cooler is better than stock, again external filter is very effective.

6. ALARM KEY FOBS-My car came with none. Subaru seems to still sell them at $50-$60 each. Another choice seems to be eBay

Yes, any Subaru fob should work. Look in the FAQ for directions on programming them.

7. PAINT-Aside from having my local dealer make me a small batch, where might I find touch-up paint for the exterior (blue)?

Yes, there is a site that has factory matches, forgot the site though. Comes in pen and small bottles.

8. SERVICE HISTORY-I’ve had no luck finding service history records for the car. I tried all dealers in the areas where the car spent its life. Monday I call Subaru for assistance. Any thoughts?

Subaru can tell you any recalls or service done at any dealership. Get friendly with your service manger, first name friendly.

9. DRIVER’S SEAT COVER-Any ideas where I can find a stock seat covering? This one is in tough shape and needs replacement. Subaru wants $450 for the one.

Ebay, or buy new seats. I'll sell you mine for a couple hundred and buy aftermarket seats.

10. HANDLING-Has anyone found good luck with particular springs/rates? Drop spring kit? Struts?

Koni and GC coilovers are the best for money. Or Motorsport warehouse springs and OE replacement struts

Are there any specific sites I should know about for stock and (light) performance parts?

Subaru parts, they have a 15% sale now too.

Welcome to the site.

Lots of good questions. I'd suggest using the "Search" feature and then posting in specific threads for more info.

Significant Technical Input Registered SVX Classic SVX
Floor Mats: The entire stock of gray factory floor mats has long gone. The beige ones recently did too. Motorsportwarehouse has mats designed for the SVX which are heavier, larger, and fit better than OEM and are of better quality overall. Available to match your interior.

http://svx-motorsport-accessories.st...greysvxlo.html

Shift Kit: Works wonderfully. Smooth shifts under normal acceleration and firm, quick shifts under hard acceleration. Some members have had issues with the blinking power light on startup. Most members I know who had it love it.

Transmission Cooler: A definite addition. Many use the B&M Supercooler #70255. Small, effective and easy to install. In front of the radiator behind the grille. Check http://www.bmracing.com/index.php?id...bcat=28&pid=73

Alarm Remotes: The KeylessRide remotes on ebay are excellent! They are cheaper, smaller, lighter, and much better constructed than OEM. Available on ebay or directly from http://www.keylessride.com The black ones can either be a 1 button or 2 button remote. Your choice, works exactly the same. I even accidentally sent one through the wash cycle. Works perfectly. Programs without any problems.

Touchup Paint: Go to http://www.paintscratch.com they have it in various size bottles and touch-up pens. They mix it fresh for each order (It doesn't sit around on shelves getting stale). They guarantee perfect color match.

Motorsports Warehouse has most of what your looking for, or can get it. Coil overs, floormats and seat covers. The ECUTune stuff only does the engine ecu. The resistor behind the battery and the shift kit have nothing to do with the ECUTune Stage I. If you call Motorsports Warehouse, make sure you take to Dayle. Mike at ECUTune is "Longassname" here on the site. As for how good is the Stage I I cant say. I went straight for the Stage III and havent looked back.
