The "splines" in my clutch basket are also serrated, yet mine works just fine. You can remove the drive shaft, but only the rear half. You're right about removing the front half, ATF will leak out. Just leave the idler bearning attached.

What about the chipped clutch disks? I cannot see this being "ok".

If that is normal wear, I'll be darned. Anyway if that is not your problem I would think that u-joint may be causing some trouble. You can come pick up that driveshaft and I have been thinking of a good trade. I wanna try a project so get in touch w/ me.
