Steering & struts help

Hi
I'm new to the club - been with the UK lot for 6 months since buying my silver 91 Jap import. Put 11000 exciting & trouble free miles on since then, but..

The rack needs replacing (worn inner joints). I have one to replace and altho' it looks straightforward, getting it out of the subframe looks a nightmare! Any advice - engine raise or subframe drop??!!

The strut bearings need replacing. Does the spring need compressing to remove the strut?

Seen a lot about the steering o ring replacement - which one is this? Rather do it with the rack out than in!

Thanks in anticipation

Tony

I have no help for you on the rack, but on the front struts, yes, you need to compress the springs to remove the mount (where the bearing is). If you have considerable mileage, you may wish to replace the strut.

The o-ring is the one between the resevoir and the pump - far from the rack and therefore doesn't matter when you replace it. Just remove the fluid with a turkey baster or something like it, remove the appropriate screws (no need to remove the hoses), and replace the o-ring.

I haven't done the rack but the service manual say how to do it. The subframe stays put and the rack only has to be rotated about 90 deg to slide out. I agree it looks very tight to me and something that needs a lot of patience.
