ront diffy

I am trying to seperate the 'torque converter case'(front diffy) from the tranny main case. I have removed the 6 bolts and the 4 nuts, pulled the input shaft, but can't get the cases to split! Did I miss something? Do I need to undo something inside the main case?
I want to replace the pump gasket, per the TSB, but can't get the diffy off.
Suggestions?
Thanks, mile-hi-bri - Brian

I've never removed the diff case from the gearbox case, but I have removed the extension housing, and it was pretty well stuck on there. In the case I used a gear puller, but you'd need a pretty huge one to pull off the diff case that way.

Anyway, if it's anything like the extension housing, it's just glued on there and is goign to require some force. But I'd have to admit that I don't know that for sure. Do you have the FSMs?

Front Diffy

Yes I do have the FSM for the tranny, and I followed what it said. But you know how they are fairly informative, yet not really!
It says "1) Separation of converter case and transmission case sections:
a. Separate these cases while tapping lightly on the housing.
b. Be careful not to damage the oil seal and bushing inside the converter case by the oil pump cover."
It doesn't even mention to remove all nuts and/or bolts as required.
My point about it is fairly informative...
I realize you can't spell out EVERYTHING, just thought I might have missed something that another person had caught during their previous experiences.
I guess that means alot of patient, but consistent BFHing(rubber of course!)

I ha dthe same experience as Nick with the back end transfer housing. I took awhile with a BF wood mallet to get it moving. I leave a few nuts / bolts in place but backed out several turns just to catch the thing if it should decide to come off fast. I have also thought about using wood chisels to open the split.

stuck tranny

Yeah, my T-case section was tough to remove too.

I think the steel alignment studs corrode due to electrolosis with the aluminum housing. This results in the too-tight fit.

I banged on the steel bolts with my brass hammer for a long time (like an hour) to get mine off. It was really stuck on the alignment studs. The gasket wasn't a problem.

Try to resist the urge to jamb a screw driver/wood chisel/putty knife/crowbar/shaped charge between 'em. You may be able to remove the damage you WILL cause with a file.
If You have to use something, I'd use the putty knife to break the gasket seal. Just keep wiggling the tranny. It'll come off eventually.
