Need advice

What's up everyone? I've always known of SVXs but never really gave them a second glance. Not saying I ever hated them, just didn't know much about them. Currently my family only has one vehicle, a 2010 Taurus. We have two small toddlers so we will be lugging around car seats for a while. My question is mainly would buying an SVX for a second car mainly for me be a smart move? Just not sure about the reliability of these cars and only know a few problems that they are accustomed to. I'm a car enthusiast and not long ago had to get rid of my 91 civic si on account of the babies.

I have found a few for sale here and there but the one that has caught my eye is a 93 LS-L Aniversary AWD with 133xxx miles. It's around $3,450

Re: Need advice

I might get shouted down for this, but with two small children it's likely to be a car you'll enjoy by yourself rather than with your family, You'll probably grow weary of putting seats & babies in the back.

I have no idea of your financial situation, but typically having a couple of children tends to sap spare income you may have. That's income you might need to keep your SVX in good running order. Mine has been a money pit, but to be fair it was tired when I bought it and I've always paid others to do the work on it.

Let the discussion begin.

Re: Need advice

Getting a car that does not require a small fortune to get it back into good shape is a crap shoot. I put money into mine but lucky for me most of it was not needed costs just improvements I wanted.

That being said check out the car fully, or have it checked out. even things like wheel bearings are not easy an probably not cheap to change.
if the car is in great shape both mechanically and body I say go for it, the putting in of car seats should be only needed a few times, the seats can stay in the car right? getting the kids in is not that bad, I have 2 autistic sons and so have to do this still, one can put his own seatbelt on but the other can not.

Re: Need advice

I would vote no. If you want something a little sporty that will handle the kids and have good reliability, buy a more recent Impreza WRX.
I personally would not want to be putting babies and car seats in the back seat all the time. The trunk is also quite limited.

I totally agree. It is an old vehicle and things do get expensive in parts. If it is for you only and you have money and time to play with it as a hobby, then it is a fun and rewarding car to have. Just my honest opinion.

Re: Need advice

Chase,
I had two kids in a variety of two and four door Subarus and dealing with car seats are MUCH easier to access with four doors!
Other than that the SVX is about the safest car you can drive!
My one son has two SVXi, and two kids in car seats and my other son has an SVX and a 2008 Crown Vic backup.
My kids loved the XT6 and booster seats.
And I am happy that they drive SVX by choise now.
Occasionally $hi+ happens and when it does I want them to be in the safest thing possible!
Just a loving fathers thoughts.

Ditto that. Get a pre-2008 WRX wagon. A full-on hoot to drive, oh so practical, and if you ask me, one sexay looking vehicle.

If you want exclusivity and a tad more luxurious interior, try to find the Saab version.

Re: Need advice

Honestly I'm looking for a second car so that we won't be stuck with just one vehicle. Need the car to be as cheap as possible but still want something i would enjoy. Was looking at the Honda Prelude Si with four wheel steer but can't seem to find one in good enough shape. I've always wanted a Subaru and came across the SVX. I love the powerplant in these cars. I'm going to put a link at the bottom of the car I found and would love to hear what everyone thinks. There's a youtube video of him going over the car fully, pointing out all the flaws and doing test drive.

Re: Need advice

Other than needing a battery tray, battery hold down, a sagging drivers side sun visor the only thing that I can see that it needs is to have the hood repainted.
That interior is awesome!

Re: Need advice

It's been for sale for two or three months now so you might be able to negotiate it down a little. Obviously it needs a respray but otherwise it looks very clean.

Re: Need advice

You're looking at a 21 year-old discontinued imported vehicle. Parts for it will likely be more expensive than a newer model. Being older, it will have some problems at some point. The frequency and severity of those may depend on how hard you drive it and how well you maintain it.

On the plus side, it is a one-owner vehicle with what looks to be very well-kept maintenance records so you should be able to identify if there have been any chronic issues with it by looking at those records. New paint is obviously needed but there appears to be no sign of rust.

Before purchasing it, I would check with your local dealership or with other shops in your area to see if they have anyone familiar with the SVX, especially if you are not particularly keen on doing things yourself.

Re: Need advice

Personnally, i dont think the svx would be a good choice for kids, its more of a 2person cruiser people in the back are cramped.

i'd recommend either an impreza or legacy wagon, for a longer term investment because you will be hauling more around with the extra bodies.

i have an svx and an impreza wagon and theres alot more you can do with the wagon.

I saw the missing engine cover and the missing wiper arm plastic cover, but did not feel that it was enough to mention.....
