Adjuster... If it is State Farm, The "adjuster" will total your car and offer you a check for the fair market value of your car. That fair market value will be no more than 1/2 the cost of replacing it.

They will offer to let you keep it and charge you a few hundred dollars for keeping your car. If you agree, they will then change the amount for keeping your car, stating Gee, that car was worth more than we thought.

Sure hope, for your sake, that it isn't State Farm!

Re: My SVX got hit! ARGH!

Keith,

Thank you for your concern. The other party is insured with Pennsylvania National. They called me early yesterday, but I haven't heard back today yet. They are awaiting verification of the other driver's policy and my copy of the police report which is still not ready.

Once they recieve the report, then they can send the adjuster out to look at my car.

Re: My SVX got hit! ARGH!

Talk about timing...

As I navigated away from my new post, my cell phone rang. The adjuster, "Russ", is coming tomorrow morning to do the assessment. As glad as I am to hear this news, I am still tense as to what the evaluation will amount to.

Re: My SVX got hit! ARGH!

I would guess no more than $2500.

Today, the insurance adjuster looked at the car, as it sits at my mother's house. My brother cleaned it up the evening prior so it would not appear neglected, as it missed its bi-weekly wash.

I already had somewhat of a confrontation with the adjuster over the phone, with him insisting that the quarter panel would not need to be replaced and that there is no need to write it or total the car.

Once I recieve his formal estimate, I plan to contest it with AT LEAST three estimates from reputable body shops, which will all suggest the quarter replacement. I do hope for the best, as I would like the quarter replaced, along with the rear bumper cover and the lens which cracked along the bottom. (Overlooked by adjuster.)

More details as they develop.

Mike-

I somewhat agree that the quarter panel doesn't need to be replaced. When my dad backed into my green 95 in the driveway some years ago, I was given two options by the adjuster. Either the car would be totaled, or I would agree to have the quarter panel repaired and the car wouldn't be totaled.

Photos of the damage can be found here:

After the repair:

Re: My SVX got hit! ARGH!

I'm inclined to agree with Mike [above], with one strong proviso:

Hold out for a quarter panel replacement because it is costly. Then, compromise, do a deal. Get enough money to replace the other damaged parts, and including the cost of a good all over repair and respray.

Otherwise the newly repaired part will look glossy and repaired compared to the rest of the car.

Aim to end up with a pretty and well finished car. You actually don't need a rebuilt car Mike.

Re: My SVX got hit! ARGH!

Well, after all of that hassle, I was given the incorrect insurance information. Said newspaper company(responsible party)'s supervisor is off today and cant speak with me. I'm calling around to see what I can find out. After having an adjuster out and everything, Penn Nat'l Insurance calls and says that the company is not one of their policy holders. Here I am now, hunting around trying to find who the f*** would give this joke of a company a policy so that I can get their adjuster here to get my damn check.

Frustrated? You bet.

I call NJSP because they omitted the three digit insurance code from the police report and the officer proceeds to tell me that "I'm lucky he even put the name (which was wrong) of the insurance company", as they "aren't required to do that. (I) should consider (myself) lucky."

Back to the phones....

If police do anything for the public we, as a group, are lucky... real lucky.

Keith,

There is nothing to turn over. I do not carry collision coverage on that particular SVX.

Mike-

Contact your insurance company and see if they can help you. When the city snow plow hit my Audi earlier in the year, I called Geico (my insurance company) and asked for their help. They took all of the information and helped me through the process. I do not carry collision coverage on my Audi, but they were still very willing to help. They got in contact with the city's insurance company and helped work everything out.

I would also suggest physically going to the office of the newspaper and demand action.

That's what I would do, at least. These situations are NEVER simple and easy. They want you to give up.

Re: My SVX got hit! ARGH!

Well Mike I would tell the adjuster hes full of sh!t and that quarter DOES infact need replaced. I looked closley at the photos provided and it looks like the rear body panel is pushed in a significant amout judging by the bumper/quarter panel line which if fixed will never line up right OR you'll have a quarter panel full of putty which is bad. Having the quarter panel replaced insures that the bumper will line up perfect just like factory again. If you bring it to Reading I can help you remove the rear bumper so we can get a better look at things if you didn't do that already.

Re: My SVX got hit! ARGH!

The correct insurance company and I have been in touch on Friday and this morning, and I was called by the adjuster as well. I had two more estimates done as well. I am just waiting to hear back on the adjuster's eta. I have parked the car and I am driving the Claret until Reading.
