Jeff if your old key is an original, it should have a 4 digit code on it, any locksmith can cut a new one from that code.....if you don't have the original key, the number is on the door lock on the pass. side door....

But a good dealer should be able to cut it off the VIN

Can't speak to this particular issue, but if a Subaru service or parts rep ever displayed that attitude toward my car, I'd strive to never again darken that dealership's door.

Did the original SVX key look different than other subaru keys?

No. The 90-94 Legacy and the SVX have the same key.

You can buy a lock kit from subaruparts.com, which includes all of the locks and ignition with a set of keys. This is what I'll be doing, since I need two keys to get into my car and start it, and that doesn't even cover the trunk, pass door, or glove box.

Ty it is stamped on the original keys...and into the lock cylinder on the door lock of the passenger side door....but you have to remove the lock to read it....
