How "Hot" is considered as overheated?

Talking about a compact size laptop.....

My 4 lbs 12.1" size ultra-compact laptop(about 9 mths old) powered by "Athlon XP-M" seems to be running pretty hot lately. The fan is never on its high speed but it's always on low speed... ( is it supposed to cycled on and off?)

Just not sure how hot is considered as overheated and do we need to do some services(talking about hardware,...) to the laptop periodically, too?

Does it ever lock up?

Remember these CPU's can run over 60°C and cooling is difficult due to lack of space. The entire laptop case ends up being the heatsink so it will get hot.

If it starts locking up under full load then you know there is a problem.

Lock up? You meant the CPU just stops running by itself?

NO!! Never happened. I understand that due to the compact size so it might get hot easily ... less space to cooling...plus I heard Athlons run hotter...

I am just not sure if my CPU's under normal temp...one thing I noticed is the WI-FI (internet performance) seems not to be working as smooth when it gets hot...maybe the internal antenna's performance is weakened by the heat.

PS: Dave, do your service your laptop in hardware and software? how? how often?
PS: Other applications still ran pretty good when the WI-FI seemed not as good...
PS: I am also not so comfortable to let it run all day if the fan keeps running...

I don't have a laptop...yet.

My experiences with wireless are not that great. I've had speed issues as well as security issues when connecting (only 1 or 2 security protocols seems to work for me).

If you're confident with your ability you can check the fan for dust and clean it out if necessary. I would also make sure to not block the various vent holes.

I'm setting up my cousin's laptop for her (Dell 6400, Intel T2500 - dual 2GHz, 1GB, 80GB, X1300) and that thing gets hot under full load. The case has vent holes on all sides of it.

It's still under warranty...if I open and check by myself, the warranty will be voided...

Under full load, I could feel that the fan is going to the higher speed...

I wouldn't worry about it then.
