What to get?

I'm going to be swapping out my 4HEAT for a MT tranny. My question to the SVX gurus. What should I go with? A 4.11 5MT or an STi 6MT? Is the weight between the 2 different and which is easier to swap in? I was thinking the 6MT would be easiest because of the axles being the same length as ours.

Tom? John?

Well, I can tell you the Sti 6mt winds at a much higher rpm than the 5mt... And the 6mt is much heavier than any 5mt. The 6mt transmission itself is also the same length as the auto (or very close... but im pretty sure its the same length) and the 5mt is significantly shorter. Swapping in a 5mt requires some lengthening of your driveshaft while I believe a 6mt swap does not.

The 6mt from the Sti is one of, if not the strongest, transmissions to install into the SVX. The 5mt from an 04+ WRX is also one of the stonger candidates.

I remember there being mention that the gears in the 6mt, at least the final ones could be swapped out from another car in order to get a taller final drive and a more comfortable cruising rpm.

The 5mt is excellent for people who have some sort of budget, and the 6mt is the best for people who can spare the expense of having a car they can "beat on" at the track and still have it come back unscathed every time.

EDIT: Might I also mention that the 5mt offers a 50/50 split of power to the front/rear wheels and the 6mt (when not hooked up to its dccd controller) offers a 35/65 split (rear bias)

There are other threads that explain more details, but I figure Id throw in my $.02

*The 6MT has the added hassle of swapping the rear end (R180 and axles), whereas the 5MT bolts right up to our 3.545 R160.

*The STi 6MT can have JDM Forester STi 5th & 6th gear ratios swapped in which are the tallest MT cruising gears available (Forester STi 6th = .707, compared to JDM 6th @ .842, USDM 6th @ .756, USDM WRX 5th @ .738). Talk to Mychialo about that one.

*the 6MT is also available in non-DCCD, which uses the same viscous coupling center differential as the WRX 5MT (50/50 split).

The cheapest (read best performance : price ratio) option is the 3.90 WRX 5MT. The 4.11 and 4.44 requires a new diff, just like the 6MT, though the gearboxes are still cheaper. The 6MT is probably the most expensive, but probably worth it if you plan to not drive like a little old lady.

This is just my 2 cents, but I've researched the topic fairly extensively, as I'm planning a swap in the next little while as well.

Rear biased!?!? I'm so in! I figured I might as well put the 6MT in since the SVX will eventually get force fed.

I've been talking with Tom about the full on swap. I wasn't going to keep many stock drive line parts. I know the diff and axels will need swapping.

Has anyone got the DCCD to work? That'll be sweet to have an SVX that can give a WRX a run for its money!

to me, it is not worth the hassle of hooking it up. I am the only person with a DCCD 6mt in their car as of right now.

I might end up being the second

You can get aftermarket DCCD controllers for about $400USD, though nobody seems to be able to answer if 'Automatic' mode will work or not. Consensus thus far seems to be 'no'.

So you haven't gotten it to work but what is the bias?

Like he said earlier, the default bias on the most common 6MTs is 35 front/65 rear. There are a few other splits available in JDM boxes (45/55 for sure).

NASIOC has a decent thread on how it all works: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...highlight=dccd

That'll be nice to have a more rear bias. I'm trying to find a shop now to do the swap. The only reason I'd have a shop do it is I don't know how to weld, plain and simple. Unless someone wants to come out to Cali for a couple days and help with the swap. There are welders at the Auto Hobby shop I do all my usual work at.

Another thing on the 6MT, the drive shaft, tranny, axels and diff all go up in like factory?
