FRS radios to borrow for Spring Classic
In an effort to improve our communication during the driving tours, we would like to use the little FRS radios starting with the Spring Classic.
It would work well if the lead car and tail car each had one, as well as one for the camera guy that will be driving ahead and setting up to take shots of the line of cars driving by certain areas. That's 3 radios, and so far none of the people designated for these tasks own a set of them.  So if anyone out there that has some would be generous enough to bring them to the event and loan them to the folks that need to use them for the day, that would be greatly appreciated!  Likewise, anyone that has these should bring them, and beyond the first three that need them, everyone else can have one too and listen in, communicate, etc. And if you are thinking of something to spend $50 or so on, this might be a fun thing, as we plan to use these from now on in the future. I don't own a pair yet, but I believe there are several brands and they all work on similar frequencies and can be tuned to all be on the same channel. Someone who knows more can chime in with advice though. We decided on these because we need better communication between the front of the pack and the rear, especially as our groups get bigger (we aren't always going to get that long line of cars through an intersection together, have places to pull over, etc). Cell phones only offer one-on-one communication, and experience tells that there isn't much coverage in the places we travel. CBs would be great, but are not as small and portable, and really how many are we going to convince to rig all that up on their SVX?

I noticed at the tech meet earl had some radios, and i was thinking of getting a pair of 2 way radios also, I noticed audiovox is the only brand selling a charger with their 7 mile radio, but im wondering if the audiovox work with the cobra or motorola? I know they can go to the same frequency but im not sure about the lock out channels.

I don't know how I missed this thread, but I did until now. I have 4 of them and only 3 work. I have 2 that are Icom and the others I don't remember the brand. As long as they are FRS radios, they will work with each other as long as you are using the same channels. It doesn't matter if they are 2, 5, or 7 mile range.

I would think that it would be good to come up with a channel and an alternate in case there is a lot of chatter on the first one. That way we know the radios will all be able to be on the 2 frequencies.

Cool, thanks for the tips Earl.
If you could bring yours it would be cool, and sounds like some others might be buying some and now they know what to get. I want to get some soon too, but don't know if I'll be able to swing it by May 1st.

I'll be bringing a pair to use and a pair to sell if anyone is interested. The ones that I will be selling are a pair of Motorolla Talkabout 14Ch FRS Radios w/ 38 quiet codes per channel. I wont be asking for much, make me an offer. The money will most likey go straight into the gas tank. I will also be selling a complete set of xenon bulb lights for the SVX. These emit bright blue / white light. I have 4 bulbs, 2 hi-beams and 2-lows. I'm asking $25 for all four! These are new in the boxes. One bulb was tested to see what color the lights were, shipping wasn't refundable so I'm trying to break even. PM me if you are interested or email me: powdersnow@comcast.net. I think that the radios are a great idea and I'm getting really stoked for this meet!

FRS Radios Update
Target has 2 1/2 mile range FRS radios on sale for $12.50 for a st of 2. (Virgin Pulse brand) They are marked down from $49.99 to $12.48. They do not have rechargable batteries, but who cares. They take AAA batteries and last 16 hours or so on new ones. This is the cheapest I have ever seen and thought I would share.
