SVX exhaust
hey all,
The '92 LSL just developed some sort of exhaust leak today. The car is much louder and you can smell exhaust gases slightly in the car. Sounds like the problem is close to below the driver's seat. I looked under and the whole exhaust system looks somewhat rusty, what is the cost for a new system? Will aftermarket parts fit or just OEM parts? Anyone recommend anything else that would work? thanks Tracy |

might be a leaking donut gasket where the duals hook up to the combining cat.. that's about $30 worth of parts and maybe 2 hours labor.. but then again, it might not be..

I'd get under the car and check it over completely for holes... feel along the top of the pipe too. Also... not necessarily totally recommended... might want to get someone small and light inside your car while you lie underneath it (up on ramps of course unless you're REALLY skinny)... and start the car... should be able to tell really quick where the noise is coming from.
Of course, doing this when the car is cold is definitely a good thing... don't want any liability for burned flesh And I agree with the earlier post... the Stebro exhaust pretty much rocks |

SVX exhaust
How much would a Stebro exhaust cost? Do mufflers shop sell these or would I buy it and have a shop install it?

http://www.stebro.net/stct.htm for the e-mail/phone #. their SVX page appears to be down at thte moment. i paid around $800US (they're in Canada).
may seem pricey, but its the best performance and grin generator for the money other than a Nitrous system, IMHO.

... on the flip side, if you want a quiet life the Stebro might not work best for you. Although the idle sound IS really cool the noise when driving might drive you insane.
It's been a couple of years since I was in an SVX with a Stebro... so please excuse the two-way answer here |

the exhaust fix...
I say go custom and spend less for a longer lasting exhaust...but sounds like your catalyct converter just died...that can b replaced for about less than $200 in Dallas with an aftermarket heavy duty converter of the same stock size but I customed out from down pipes to exhaust tips for under $450 and it fells and sounds....thrilling!and if your check engine light is on don't forget those O2 sensors....

I sure did..the muffler was $125 from hagnaflow and the tips were from motorsport warehouse and the mandrel-bent piping was from the local shop but granted I befriended the guy and told'm if I can notice the difference in performance and like the sound I'll bring my people who are contumplating the same thing...I did,it did, so I did...and I didn't let him order anything..I ordered what I wanted and showed him what I wanted..if he would have ordered the muffler and tips it would've come up to $600 easy but that still beat a pre-fab cat-back system...

ok they do not bend
they fabricate...the pipes in his shop are pre-bent in different sizes( 1.5-4.0" in diameter )and lengths he finds the perfect length and welds them together...it's a mexican owned shop in arlington,texas where he hooks up alot of there big ford,gmc and chevy trucks..master welder and crafty with those damn pipes..my svx has been rockin since 2001 with his stainless steel exhaust..smoke_svx is from that area also...it's by far the cheapest way to go cost wise and the more experience the shop is with motorsports the better quality you'll get but you'll also pay 4 that level of custom expertise...

Whats the big deal with bending stainless pipe? I can do it if you want to pay for the pipe, but we ussually just use aluminized pipe it's good for at least 5years on an everyday driver in New England.

I'm 99% sure that the SVX exhaust system is stainless steel. The "rust" you see is probably heat discoloration, a common side effect of heating stainless steel. It looks bad, but is harmless. You probably just have what many of us have had......a bad gasket. Dave |

Yes the SVX exhaust is stainless and that is why its lasts about 10 years. I am not sure of the grade but for sure it isn't what pot and pans are made from. The outside surface corrodes and this helps to protect the metal underneath. When the rust is removed from the surface new rust will form. I had a crack in mine welded up recently.
