Yes, the extra shelf spot would be taken up by the head unit. Head unit's come (generally*) in two standardized sizes. DIN, and double DIN. This head unit is a double DIN, and your head unit is a single DIN, with a single DIN pocket below it. A double DIN is (you guessed it) twice as high as a single DIN. So it will fit and take up both spots.

*A lot of newer OEM head units don't follow this standard at all.

Thanks! I installed my gas (regular/premium) switch within that shelf. So I can't use this unit

Yes. It will use the entire area inside the radio door.
