Power Steering Pump

Hi, my pump sounds very noisy, I havent had a close look at it yet, but I guess I will be looking for a replacement.
Has anyone got a pump going spare ?
Any suggestions of where I can buy one (not a main dealer !) ?
Do we have a guide to changing it (I printed off the O ring change a while ago) ?
Other than that car is running fine.

Arthur

Re: Power Steering Pump

First try replacing the O-Ring between the tank and the pump, this is the cause of most PS issue....and it only take a few cents, and a few minutes to install...

Re: Power Steering Pump

Thanks, I do have the O ring, a job I have being planning to do as a preventitive measure. I had a look at the pump and It needed topping up, the lost oil seems to have leaked onto the engine, is this a symptom of the ring failure ?

Sure is....
Replace that O-ring, and I bet it fixes you're problem...

Re: Power Steering Pump

I have one pump which has all new bearings and seals etc but needs a new cartridge assy which I believe costs about £70. With that it would be as new. Last week I bought a good used pump off ebay as a spare which you can have for what I paid - £40 incl postage to me. I haven't tried it (or even opened the box...) but it is from a low mileage '96 car I was told by the seller who seems genuine. The first pump would be £30 and as I have become very familiar with these bloody things I would fit the cartridge for you if you wanted - either you or I supplying part. At work we use DHL which would be about £10 delivery.
Cheers,
Steve

Re: Power Steering Pump

I Have changed the O Ring, the original was hard and cone shaped, its not a normal O Ring application, it has a tapered hole, very odd. The hardest part is emptying the fluid, I used a diesel engine priming hand pump (black rubber egg shaped thing). So with the new O Ring I have refilled and it seems to be OK.

The mystery is where did the the fluid leak from, it has been blown around the radiator fans and on the cam belt covers, not a huge amount, but enough to leave a film over it all. It is clean and smells like Dextron II so its from the PAS. I wonder if it was from the filler cap, it looks as if it has a pressure relief mechanism. Any Ideas ?

Re: Power Steering Pump

When the O-ring is bad it will suck in air and froth up the fluid, making it over flow out of the cap, plus leak at the o-ring.

Glad it seemed to fix it.....cheap fixes are always great!
